The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity.  Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

The China Power Project is a leading source on China’s foreign policy and power projection, focusing on five main issue areas: military, economics, technology, social, and international image. China Power utilizes both qualitative and data-driven analysis to unpack the complexities surrounding China’s rise.

CSIS is seeking one (1) full-time Research Assistant or Associate to join the China Power Project to start in June 2024.The Research Assistant or Associate will support the China Power Project’s research, which utilizes quantitative and qualitative tools to examine the evolving nature of China’s power. Key research areas include: Chinese foreign and security policy, cross-Strait dynamics, U.S.-China relations, the People’s Liberation Army, dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region, and other related topics.

Candidates should be motivated self-starters whose research interests align with the program’s work. The China Power Project is a fast-paced environment, and candidates should be resourceful and enjoy a wide variety of analytical and data-driven tasks.

The minimum salary for the Research Assistant position is $55,000, and the minimum salary for the Research Associate position is $58,000.

 

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:  

     Assisting with the development of content for the China Power website

     Conducting research using English and Chinese language sources

     Analyzing and writing on issues related to China

     Proofreading and copyediting

     Tracking issues concerning China’s international affairs

     Curating datasets and creating data visualizations

     Supervising interns on their daily tasks and managing their workload

     Assisting with public and private event logistics as needed

 

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE

A GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution Candidates for the Research Assistant level must have at least a Bachelor’s degree. Successful candidates for the Research Associate position will have a Master's degree or a Bachelor’s degree plus 2 years of relevant experience Superb writing and editing skills Demonstrated knowledge and interest of issues concerning Chinese foreign and security policy Previous research and/or publications on China, preferably Chinese foreign/security policy Strong proficiency in Mandarin Chinese Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities Proficiency with Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets Strong communication and interpersonal skills Experience with quantitative and qualitative analysis

 

Strongly Preferred Qualifications:

·       Familiarity with website development and/or content management systems

·       Experience with general-purpose statistical software (e.g. STATA, R, SPSS)

·       Background in data visualization, especially experience using tools like Datawrapper and Flourish
