UNHCR works in close coordination with public authorities, civil society organizations, private sector, academia, and development actors to enable access to basic rights and favorable conditions for refugees´ socio-economic inclusion. In this context, UNHCR Brazil is supporting the State to develop comprehensive national and local policies to receive, protect and integrate refugees and other people in need of international protection. UNHCR Brazil provides protection to people under its mandate countrywide, ensuring identification and response to those with specific needs, and to strengthen the participation of refugees in decision-making processes. The support of UNHCR Brazil for public authorities and the engagement within the private sector to improve the refugees´ integration is key to sustain an effective strategy of communication in the several digital channels. Dealing with the strategy of content production and projects that enhance the awareness of UNHCR and ways to combat xenophobia and any forms of discrimination against refugees and asylum seekers means that UNHCR-Brazil will continue to work with several partners, strengthening the media relations to sustain an innovative approach on the way UNHCR-Brazil delivers its services and products. The Public Information Unit performs several activities to highlight the plight of refugees and their achievements, to strengthen UNHCR brand visibility, to increase engagement with the refugee cause, to recognize donor's contribution and to promote a more favorable protection environment.

The Communication/PI Assistant will report to the Head of Sub-Office and will have regular contacts within the Public Information Unit in the Country Office, involving functional guidance and exchange of information. The incumbent will support the elaboration and implementation of the Office's Public Information strategy, including the coordination with internal and external stakeholders and suppliers. He/She will support the Sub-Office Boa Vista to implement the internal communications products and the elaboration of external and internal reports. Moreover, the incumbent will support with media requests, liaise with other external entities/partners regarding public information activities and produce original content for UNHCR communication channels, ensuring the visibility of UNHCR and partners in this operation, always taking into account protection concerns and the best interest of beneficiaries. The nature of certain tasks requires discretion and confidentiality as per UNHCR standards and practices. The incumbent will also support in actions of Communications with Communities and will be responsible of actions to stop the spread of rumors and fake news among the people of concern.

Desirable Candidate Profile

Desirable previous graduation and working experience in Communications/PI.
Professional writing, editing, and reviewing content skills.
Experience working on advocacy campaigns, brand position and government/media relations.
Desirable working experience related to humanitarian contexts and working with civil society organizations is considered relevant for the position.
Strong knowledge social media channels and content production involving audiovisual contents is an asset. Experience with reporting, news/social media analysis, institutional and private/public relations.
Understanding of the political scenarios on national and local levels.

Communications Assistant
Organizational Setting and Work Relationships

The Communications Assistant will report to the Communications Officer and will have regular contacts within the office/unit involving exchange of information. S/he will also have limited external contacts on routine matters.

All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. Duties
- Collect press-cuttings of articles in national, regional, international and periodicals that pertain to refugee related issues and to the work of the office.
- Compile and maintain the mailing list for press releases, information bulletins, etc and ensure timely despatch of information to media and other interested parties.
- Classify and maintain adequate stock of PI materials and promote sale of merchandise where appropriate.
- Maintain up-to-date the catalogue of PI material and types monthly report regarding sales and stocks for submission to PI at Headquarters in accordance with established guidelines.
- Provide clerical assistance with regard to PI events such as poster campaigns, exhibitions, and public awareness raising events.
- Respond to routine telephone and written enquiries from a variety of sources such as the media, the public, NGOs and government officials etc.
- Maintain PI files up-to-date.
- Have access to UNHCR's communication systems.

- Support the identification and management of risks and seek to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility. Ensure decision making in risk based in the functional area of work. Raise risks, issues and concerns to a supervisor or to relevant functional colleague(s).
- Perform other related duties as required.
