Terms of ReferenceOrganizational context

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect and assist refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, internally displaced persons, and returnees. The UNHCR opened its’ office in Pristina in 1994 and operates through the Office of UNHCR Chief of Mission located in Pristina. The office contributes to strengthening of the asylum system in the area of legislative framework, capacity building as well as through advocacy interventions for protection and solutions for people with and for whom UNHCR works. Furthermore, UNHCR is engaged in the area of provision of legal aid, information, interpretation, assistance in close collaboration with authorities and stakeholders.

Selected candidates will be part of UNHCR OCM Protection Unit, a team which implements protection strategy in line Strategy for UNHCR's engagement in mixed movements in the Western Balkans to support the strengthening of asylum systems and identification of viable solutions for refugees and asylum-seekers.

Interns bring diverse profiles and knowledge, innovative thinking, and different ideas to the UNHCR workplace. By undertaking this internship assignment, the intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in the humanitarian sector in an international environment, learn about the role of UNHCR in Kosovo and globally as well as gain knowledge and practical experience related to their professional background. This experience is also an excellent opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge by completing all mandatory UNHCR online training programmes.

Minimum qualifications required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current Law student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate Law studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.
• Have attended the Legal Clinic “International Protection – Asylum, Refugees and Statelessness” with the law students implemented in collaboration between the Law Faculty of Pristina University “Hasan Pristina”, UNHCR and Civil Rights Program Kosovo (CRPK).

Desirable qualifications and skills
• Strong interest in refugee rights, human rights, and humanitarian response.
• Good research and analytical skills.
• Fluency in English and local languages.
• Communication and computer skills.

Conditions
It is a full/ time role with working hours starting from 8.00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team on-site in UNHCR premises.
• The internship is full time (40 hours per week). Working hours are 8.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday.
• The intern will report directly to Protection Associate.
• All applicants must be entitled to work in Kosovo.
• The selected Intern must complete the UNHCR Mandatory Training courses within 3 months of the internship.
• Only short-listed candidates will be required to sit a written test and interview.

Allowance:
Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.

NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
