Timely and accurate transition notes for the Secretariat, including lessons learned, recommendations to strengthen support for future Presidencies, and a list of outstanding letters and pending correspondence for handover to the incoming President, completed by 31 July 2026. Expected duration02/01/26-31/07/26 Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground and Objectives The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, serves as the central platform for promoting international cooperation and providing policy guidance on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. In 2026, ECOSOC will commemorate its 80th anniversary, marking eight decades since its first meeting in 1946. This milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the Council’s legacy, renew its relevance, and strengthen its role in advancing multilateral action to address interlinked global challenges and accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The responsibilities of the President of ECOSOC at its 2026 session, H.E. Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, Permanent Representative of Nepal, include leading the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) under the auspices of the Council, the Financing for Development Forum, the Partnership Forum, the Science, Technology and Innovation Forum, and the Special Meeting on International Cooperation in Tax Matters, as well as other joint or special meetings of the Council. In fulfilling these functions, the President plays a central role in enhancing the visibility, relevance, and impact of ECOSOC as a key forum for coordination and policy leadership in the integrated implementation of sustainable development. The objective of this consultancy is to provide temporary operational, coordination, and administrative support to the Office of the President of the ECOSOC to facilitate the efficient delivery of mandated meetings and activities during the 2026 session. The individual contractor will assist with day-to-day organizational tasks, manage the President’s calendar of activities, coordinate logistical arrangements, and draft and review related materials, ensuring effective liaison with Secretariat entities and external partners. Work Assignment Under the supervision of the Director of OISC/DESA and the President of ECOSOC, the individual contractor will be responsible for the following work assignments: 1. Substantive, Administrative and Logistical Support to ECOSOC Meetings and Events: Provide substantive, administrative and logistical support for the President’s participation in all mandated meetings and events of the 2026 ECOSOC session, as set out in resolution E/RES/2026/1, as well as other relevant events included in the ECOSOC calendar of meetings. Manage the President’s calendar of activities, liaise with Secretariat entities, permanent missions, and delegations, and coordinate preparations, materials, and follow-up actions to ensure the effective organization of both in-person and virtual engagements. 2. Briefings, Statements, and Correspondence: Draft, review, and finalize briefing notes, talking points, statements, and correspondence for the President’s participation in meetings and events, taking into account the priorities and messaging agreed for the 2026 session. Ensure all materials are accurate, coherent, and reflect the integrated nature of sustainable development. Where possible, remarks should reference relevant ECOSOC reports, Chair summaries, and data to ground the messaging in evidence and institutional context. 3. Intergovernmental Coordination and Bureau Support: Collaborate with DGACM and DESA/OISC in the preparation and organization of ECOSOC Bureau meetings, including expert-level discussions. Provide coordination and logistical support to ensure smooth conduct of meetings and the timely delivery of documentation and guidance for the President and ECOSOC Bureau Members. Ensure that Bureau meeting minutes are finalized and approved in a timely manner by the President and Bureau Members. 4. Communications, Branding, and Coordination Continuity: Support communication and outreach related to the President’s activities, ensuring consistent use of ECOSOC branding and messaging across all official communications, briefing materials, and correspondence. Coordinate with DESA/OISC’s Communication Focal Point on social media content, UN Studio recordings, and press briefings. Qualifications/special skills- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in public administration, business administration, economics, communications, social and political sciences, or related field. A first-level university degree with extensive years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree is required. - A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in policy, research, coordination, economics, or development-related fields is required. - Outstanding drafting skills, ability to prepare concise communication, coordination, and background materials, and other relevant documentation is required. - Experience with inter-governmental processes is required. - Experience with the UN system, including working experience with the United Nations and/or affiliated entities is required. - Strong understanding of development issues and the interlinkages among the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development is required.
