Job Title: Programme Associate Pakistan Women Leaders Project
Department: Country Office Pakistan
Reports to (Title/ Level): Portfolio Manager EVAW, GOV and HR
Current Grade: SB3-2
Background:
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women launched its programme in Pakistan in 2007 following a request by the Government and the UN and is now strategically positioned in this regard at both the national and provincial level, post devolution. In moving towards realization of gender equality and women’s empowerment, UN Women provides support to innovative initiatives that promote women’s human rights, with a special focus on their economic security, governance/ political participation, freedom from violence, as well as preparedness and responding to humanitarian crises.
According to the 6th Population and Housing Census 2017, women and girls comprise around 49% of the total population of Pakistan, and they make immense contributions to economic and social development of the country. Despite significant efforts to empower women and fulfill their human rights, a great deal still needs to be done to improve the situation of gender equality in the country. Gender inequality in political rights is evident; women have fought long and hard for their rights to vote and hold public office. In Pakistan, the demand side of the equation shows that the gap between registered women and men voters of eligible age in Pakistan is over 9.7 million. Across the 272 demarcated constituencies of National Assembly, women, who make up almost half of the population, remain largely excluded from the electoral process mainly due to the male-driven gender regime in place.
UN Women Pakistan, under its Women’s Political Participation Unit, is initiating the implementation of a comprehensive project titled \"Pakistan Women Leaders.\" The Programme Associate will play a pivotal role in supporting the timely and effective delivery of project activities, as per the agreements with donors and in alignment with UN Women’s corporate guidelines and project management principles.
