    ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

    At this level, job holders are expected to demonstrate responsibility and initiative to respond independently to various queries with only general guidance. There is a requirement to use judgment in dealing with unforeseen operational problems on a daily basis. Job holders are expected to manage resources and coach and coordinate support staff.

    This job is based in Colombo, Sri Lanka and the position holder will report to the Head of Research, Assessment and Monitoring (RAM) Unit.

    JOB PURPOSE

    To provide effective specialized support and technical analyses to policy and programme activities that effectively meet food assistance needs.

    KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive):

    • Working closely with the Head of Unit, contribute to the planning and implementation of GIS-related activities within WFP and externally, ensuring that GIS technologies are effectively used to enhance food security monitoring and programmatic responses. This includes collaboration with the government of Sri Lanka, local authorities, and international organizations.

    • Develop and maintain WFP’s GIS database, including various map layers, GIS indicators, thematic maps, and other geo-referenced data through Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI), ensuring the quick availability of accurate and up-to-date geo-referenced data.

    • Utilize ArcGIS and other geo-spatial analysis tools to perform analyses on data related to food security, vulnerability, and emergency preparedness. Support the processing and analysis of remote sensing data to identify environmental patterns, trends, and potential risks, contributing to more effective planning and intervention strategies.

    • Leverage GIS tools to enhance WFP’s emergency preparedness and response capabilities, particularly through the development of PRISM (Platform for Real-time Impact and Situation Monitoring).

    • Develop interactive dashboards using platforms such as ArcGIS Online to generate products like the Food Security Atlas and GIS Hub, among others.

    • Build capacity among government counterparts on GIS skills, vulnerability, and risk analysis with the main objective of transferring these skills to the government of Sri Lanka.

    • Provide mapping support to the Country Office by organizing, compiling, and printing relevant maps in both digital and paper formats.

    • Perform any other tasks required in the context of overall WFP RAM operations.

      QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:


      Education: Completion of secondary school education. A post-secondary certificate in the related functional area. A first university degree in a relevant field is an advantage.


      Experience: Six years of relevant experience is needed.
