Duties and ResponsibilitiesOFFICE BACKGROUND The United Nations Department of Operational Support (DOS) helps UN Secretariat entities, including peace operations, departments and offices, succeed by providing rapid, effective, efficient and responsible support services. Its core services include supply chain management, operational human resources management, health-care management, capacity building and training for operations, support for uniformed capabilities, support to entities in special situations, information and communications technology (ICT) support, and UNHQ facility management. The Office of the Under-Secretary-General of Operational Support provides direct advisory, executive, and management support to DOS leadership and, in particular, to the Under-Secretary-General. This position is located in the Performance and Analytics Section (PAS) of OUSG-DOS. Our work covers DOS strategy and planning, performance, analytics, and innovation. PAS supports the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of strategic and budget frameworks and undertakes problem-solving and analytics deliverables, for continuous transformation and overall organizational performance of the Department. The internship is unpaid and full-time (under exceptional circumstances, a part-time internship may be accepted). Ideally, interns work five days per week (35 hours), with supervision and support of a staff member. Interns are expected to come into the office at least three days a week, in keeping with UNHQ-NY hybrid working policies. Fully remote internships will not be considered for this internship. OFFICE DUTIES The Data Analytics Intern will work as full members in the Performance Analytics Section at the Office of the Under-Secretary-General, Department of Operational Support (PAS/OUSG/DOS), pursue project assignments that are designed to make a significant impact on our work, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. The Data Analytics Intern(s) may be responsible for the following duties: • Gathering and analyzing data from various public (by using web scraping) and internal sources, and providing support in preparing data, data models, and surveys; • Performing statistical and/or mathematical programming to make sense of data gathered; • Providing technical support for existing reports, dashboards, or other tools; • Supporting team members with data cleaning from primary or secondary sources and maintaining databases/data systems; • Translating data results into written reports and data visualizations/presentations to convey information to stakeholders and leaders; • Supporting data mining, optimization, metrics development, and predictive analysis; • Contribute to the search for approaches and methods that will lead to innovative data products; • Perform other duties as required. COMPETENCIES We are looking for an enthusiastic, collaborative, and reliable individual, who is aware of the latest developments in data analytics and who consistently works to support the PAS team's goals. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). We are open to a broad range of educational backgrounds. Typically, our interns are pursuing studies in Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Operations Research, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Visualization or Analytics. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this internship assignment, fluency in English is required.
