Terms of ReferenceOrganizational Context:

The UNHCR Multi-Country Office based in Canberra, Australia, is responsible for the promotion and protection of refugee rights in the Pacific region which includes Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

The MCO Solutions Unit covers all solutions across the Pacific including Australia and New Zealand resettlement programs and to ensure that solutions and self-reliance are being considered at the earliest stage of the refugee journey. In addition to durable solutions, the MCO Solutions Unit covers protection work in the 14 Pacific Island Countries (PICs) under the MCO’s coverage. This includes building asylum systems across the Pacific, supporting government counterparts with mandate or joint refugee status determination (RSD) processes, influencing the regional protection space via shaping legislation and policy and strengthening relationships with PIC governments and other stakeholders to promote UNHCR’s protection agenda and minimize the risk of refoulement and detention.

This internship position will support the MCO Canberra with Pacific Protection work. The Pacific Protection Intern reports to the Protection Officer and engages in supporting the MCO's work of building the regional Pacific protection space.

Desired candidate profile:

- Applicants must be recent graduates or have completed a minimum of two years of undergraduate studies in the legal field, international relations or a related field; and
- Applicants must either have experience in and/or demonstrated interest in asylum and refugee protection or human rights.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist the unit with planning and implementation of core protection activities including substantive and logistical support for missions, capacity building activities or other engagements.
• Undertake and compile research on issues relevant to the protection environment in the Pacific.
• Assist with individual case management support.
• Assist in preparation of file notes, reports, administrative tasks, and any other relevant activities, as required.

The recruitment is for 6 months only.

The total monthly salary for the position which covers (Intern Food & Transportation) will be AUD 2,261.38 only.
