Organisational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Logistics, and Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies Services and Training to all Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions around the world.
The position is located in the Standing Police Capacity (SPC), based at the United Nations Global Service Center (UNGSC) in Brindisi (Italy). While Brindisi is a family duty station, the incumbent may be deployed to 'D' and "E' non-family duty stations for several months at a time. The incumbent reports to the SPC Team Leader/Administration. The SPC provides the start-up capability for the police components of new UN peace operations, and provides advice, expertise and assistance in the field of institutional law enforcement capacity building, both to peace operations and through the Global Focal Point on Rule of Law arrangement (GFP). Deployment to the field for periods of up to six months may be expected.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Legal Officer is responsible for the following duties:

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international law. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in law, including legal analysis, research and writing is required.
Experience working in a UN field operation - or similar multi-lateral or non-governmental organization - in a conflict or post-conflict setting is required.
Experience in programme management and implementation is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of the other official language (French) is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
