General description of internship
• Assisting in the counseling of persons of concern to UNHCR
• Monitoring and analyzing Belgian asylum law and practice
• Researching country of origin information and a variety of refugee and statelessness issues
• Drafting documents including reports and correspondence, and responding to information requests
• Writing, editing and translating texts (in English, Dutch and French, according to native language)
• Assisting with the organization of events
• Assisting with general office tasks
In order to be considered eligible for an internship, the following criteria must be fulfilled:
• Be a recent graduate or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme, preferable in law, political sciences and / or international relations; from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.
• Not have immediate relatives (father, mother, brother, or sister) working for UNHCR as a staff member on any contract type or as an affiliate at the time of application..
• Candidates who are not nationals of Belgium must hold a valid residence/work permit in Belgium at the time of application
• Applicants should be Dutch or French speakers at native level, and master the other respective language (French or Dutch) at working level (B1-B2), in addition to an excellent command of written and spoken English. ; and
• Evidence of previous experience and/ or a strong interest in refugee matters or human rights are appreciated.
