    The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies, and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill an intern position with a focus on WFP’s engagement with Iceland at the WFP Nordic Office, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The intern will serve as WFP’s focal point for Iceland in the Nordic Office. Iceland is a strategic partner to WFP and WFP is working with the Government of Iceland in areas such as humanitarian emergencies, climate-smart school meals and innovative solutions that helps to reduce hunger and increase global food security.

    BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION

    The WFP Nordic Office provides a strategic entry point to the Nordic countries. In 2023, the Nordic governments and private sector contributed more than USD 500 million to WFP making the Nordics collectively the 4th largest donor to WFP and top donors of flexible funding. Through proactive advocacy, strategic positioning, analysis and engagement, the WFP Nordic Office seeks to create enabling environments to protect and increase funding and partnerships from the Nordics.

    • Expected Start Date: 3 February 2025

    • Duration of internship: 6 months (full-time position)

      DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

      Under the direct supervision of the Director of the WFP Nordic Office, the candidate will perform the following duties:

      • Serve as the WFP focal point for overall engagement with Iceland:

        • Conduct regular political analyses of Iceland’s political landscape, government priorities, and its relations with other Nordic and Baltic countries.

        • Identify opportunities for WFP to establish innovative partnerships with Icelandic public, political, and private stakeholders, and support outreach activities to these partners.

        • Support with communication, advocacy, and visibility efforts with Icelandic audiences.

        • Assist plan and prepare for WFP missions to Iceland and meetings with Icelandic partners.

          • Provide general support to the Nordic Office portfolio beyond Iceland:

            • Contribute to communication efforts by creating impactful content for the Nordic Office's social media accounts and maintaining some of these platforms.

            • Share updates with Nordic and Baltic partners to keep them informed about WFP operations

            • Assist with broader Nordic Office initiatives and tasks as needed

              QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

              • Currently enrolled and having completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated in the last six months

              • University course attendance in the past 12 months

              • Excellent communication skills in Icelandic and English

              • Experience with translations – from English into Icelandic and vice versa

              • Fluency in Icelandic (mother tongue); excellent command of English; Working knowledge of a second UN and/or Nordic language would be an asset

              • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

                KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

                • BA or MA in Communication, Political Science, Law, International Development, International Business or other fields related to the mandate of WFP

                • Strong social media skills

                • Working experience in national or international organizations, relevant to the humanitarian and/or development field

                  WORKING LANGUAGES

                  Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C)

                  Fluency in Icelandic (mother tongue) is required

                  SUPERVISION

                  Under the direct supervision of the Nordic Office Director, the incumbent will be provided with close guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be elements of supervision. With the support of a comprehensive induction package, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team. As an Intern, you will be joining a team of seven partnerships colleagues and the WFP Nordic Office Director.

                  TRAINING COMPONENTS

                  Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, WeLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

                  LEARNING ELEMENTS

                  At the end of the assignment, the intern should have gained solid hands-on experience in all aspects of communication, advocacy as well as partnership-building and have obtained a profound understanding of the mandate and work of WFP and its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals/Agenda 2030.

                  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.

                  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.

                  • WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.

                  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
