The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) is a treaty-based international organization with headquarters in The Hague, the Netherlands. Its mandate is to secure the cooperation of governments and others in locating and identifying missing persons. Internship Background
Through the Missing Migrants and Refugees (MMR) Program, ICMP implements its mandate of securing the cooperation of governments and others in locating and identifying missing persons and to assist them in doing so. The internship is intended to:
- Increase the intern’s understanding of the complexities of the issue of missing persons in the context of migration and give them an insight in the work of the ICMP;
- Provide ICMP with the contribution of an outstanding young student/graduate.
The selected Intern will gain expertise in desk research, mapping and analysis of complex issues, and coordination and planning of international and other events.
The intern will directly report to the Missing Migrants Program Manager and will work under the general supervision of the Director of Policy and Cooperation. The Intern will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Conducting desk research, including comparative research on domestic institutional and legislative settings with a focus on missing migrants and more broadly migration;
- Monitoring global policy developments related to migration and having a direct impact on the issue of missing persons;
- Undertaking mapping and analysis exercises in support of the current activities undertaken in the context of the Missing Migrants and Refugees;
- Assisting in drafting reports and preparing presentations on assigned topics;
- Supporting logistical preparations for presentations and events;
- Undertaking general administration tasks;
- Performing other duties as might be assigned by the Program Manger and/or the Director of Policy and Cooperation.

- Starting date: As soon as possible
- Working hours: This is a full time position (40 hours/per week; Monday to Friday). As agreed with their supervisor, the intern must provide written notice in case of illness or other unavoidable circumstances that prevent them from observing these working hours.
- Flexible Work Arrangement: The intern will be able to arrange a flexible schedule alternating in-office and remote work upon agreement with the supervisor and in line with COVID-19 measures. ICMP is not in a position to provide the intern with office equipment for remote work arrangements.
- Insurance: Interns are responsible for providing proof of valid medical insurance coverage prior to the start of the internship placement.
- Conduct & Confidentiality: Interns are required to sign and abide by the ICMP Code of Ethical Conduct. ICMP has the authority to remove any intern from a placement due to unsatisfactory performance or conduct.
- Privileges and immunities: In The Hague – unless Dutch nationals or otherwise entitled to residency in the Netherlands – interns will be registered with the Dutch MFA for a maximum period of six months and are obligated to leave the Netherlands within fifteen (15) days at the end of their internship.
Requirements
- University degree or close to completion in the areas of human rights, law, migration studies, international relations, or related field;
- Thorough knowledge of and, possibly practical experience in, one or more of the following areas: open source monitoring; comparative research, especially in the field of human rights, migration, or related subject areas; quantitative and qualitative research methods;
- Proficiency in written and spoken English and in written and spoken Arabic (both will be tested); knowledge of German and/or Dutch is an asset.
- Analytical and research skills;
- Commitment towards the rule of law;
- Capacity to work independently;
- Ability to carry out tasks with attention to detail and on tight deadlines;
- Strong sense of initiative and teamwork;
- Excellent organizational and communication skills;
- Prior experience working for an international organization, particularly on human rights and migration issues, is an asset;
- Experience in organizing and managing events is an asset.
Mandatory requirements
- Proficiency of Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel and Power Point;
- Proven ability to interact positively with colleagues regardless of culture, nationality or gender.
