We are currently seeking to fill an intern position for the Business Development Team, Private Partnership and Fundraising Division, based in Rome, Italy.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION

The Private Partnerships and Fundraising Division (PPF) is responsible for engaging the private sector (corporations, individuals, foundations) through high-impact partnerships in support of WFP's strategic priorities, and through individual giving to build and retain support from the general public worldwide. PPF has embarked on an exceptionally ambitious new strategy 2020-2025 to raise an additional one billion dollars for hungry or malnourished people and to expand the contribution to WFP from the business sector through effective and sustainable long-term partnerships as well as from private individual supporters around the world. This includes securing new high impact technical partnerships, signing significant new corporate deals and growing existing relationships as well as building a base of one million individual supporters. Our strategy and ambition are based on need. WFP was reaching more than 128 million people in 2021 in 120 countries and we now know that we will be called on to reach many millions more as a result of the pandemic, conflict, and global food crisis.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Title of Post: Business Development Intern Supervisor: Business Development Specialist Unit: Business Development Team, PPF Country: Italy Duty Station: Rome Duration of internship: 6 months Expected Start Date: February 2023

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direct supervision of the Business Development Specialist, the candidate will perform the following duties:

• Support the mapping of the core industrial sectors relevant for the World Food Programme’s work to build a global pipeline of prospects;

• Conduct in-depth prospect research to help prioritize companies with the highest financial or non-financial potential to support the World Food Programme at a global level;

• Assist in the development of value propositions, prospect engagement strategies and relevant prospecting materials (including high-quality presentations) to facilitate outreach activities;

• Attend when possible (virtual) meetings with prospects;

• Request due diligence to the internal legal team when necessary;

• Keep clear and accurate records of prospecting efforts and intelligence on relevant systems, such as Excel spreadsheet and Salesforce;

• Support special team projects and undertake additional responsibilities as needed;

• Attend the Business Development team periodic meetings, helping the team in preparing presentations, note taking, and other support tasks as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university; University course attendance in the past 12 months; Relevant fields of study are: Business Administration, Marketing Research, Communications, Management, International Relations, Humanitarian and Development studies, or other related to the mandate of WFP; Excellent command of English; Working knowledge of a second UN language would be an asset; Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

• Good attention to detail and strong communication skills;

• Ability to plan and organize work and prioritize tasks with reasonable supervision;

• Ability to take initiative to solve problems and seek solutions;

• Work effectively in a multi-cultural environment and international organization.

• Outstanding research, data collection and analytical skills;

• Strong competency to produce high-quality written materials clearly and concisely;

• Essential computer skills in Microsoft Office applications: proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Teams and SharePoint; experience in using layout design tools desired;

• Understanding of the private sector, Sustainability, CSR and corporate philanthropy, as well as the humanitarian and development sectors desired.

WORKING LANGUAGES

• Excellent command of spoken and written English;

• Intermediate knowledge of another official UN language would be a plus (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish).

SUPERVISION (Level/Methods of Supervision)

Under the direct supervision of the Business Development Specialist, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be elemental part of the supervision. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team.

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

• Have a greater understanding of the World Food Programme’s work and its role within the wider humanitarian and development system;

• Gain knowledge on how to prospect private sector actors with sound strategies and tactics;

• Develop advanced skills in market research and prospect profiling to scope new partners;

• Gain knowledge on the WFP internal policies and processes.
