Work LocationThis internship is designed to be full-time and in person in New York but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate. Expected durationThis internship is for four months with an opportunity for extension to a maximum of six months, pending the needs of the department. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work up to five days per week (35 hours) under supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. The selected candidates are expected to start in May 2025. Duties and ResponsibilitiesThis position is located in the Office of the Director of the Programme Planning and Budget Division (PPBD), within the Office of Programme Planning Finance and Budget (OPPFB), Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC). The primary focus of this role is to support the design, development, delivery, and maintenance of data-driven products that facilitate change management initiatives. The intern will support AI and data initiatives to enhance programme planning and budgeting decision-making processes including the streamlining of support to the experts and intergovernmental bodies. Responsibilities include model design, exploratory data analysis, tool development, and integration of AI systems, aligning with PPBD’s mission to strengthen programme planning, budgeting, and performance through innovative, data-driven solutions and cross-functional collaboration Duties may include: • Assist in designing and prototyping AI algorithms and data models to support programme planning, budget formulation, and performance reporting, including applications such as forecasting tools, knowledge platforms, and unified data systems with advanced querying capabilities. • Contribute to the development and enhancement of internal tools that improve data processing or predictive analytics. • Support the creation, deployment, and optimization of machine learning models to improve scalability and efficiency in programme planning and budgeting decision-making processes. • Conduct research and pilot innovative AI technologies—such as generative AI, deep learning, and natural language processing—to identify solutions that could enhance programme planning, budget formulation, and reporting functions. • Perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) and preprocessing on budget and financial datasets to support AI model development and strategic insights generation. • Assist in integrating AI solutions into existing programme planning and budget formulation workflows to enhance automation, accuracy, and responsiveness. • Monitor, evaluate, and document progress and outcomes of AI-related projects, providing input and recommendations to improve the Division’s tools and methodologies. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure AI and data-driven initiatives are aligned with UN priorities and support organizational effectiveness. • Support PPBD’s mission to enhance data-informed planning and resource management. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. 1. Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in AI and data science (e.g., Python and R). Knowledge of other programming languages is desirable. 2. Demonstrated knowledge of AI/ML frameworks (e.g., Scikit-learn, Keras or similar). 3. Knowledge of experimenting with and building scalable machine learning models using large datasets. 4. Knowledge of libraries for building open-source LLM solutions, such as Langchain, LLamaIndex or similar ones is desirable. Knowledge of platforms like Huggingface and knowledge of evaluation tools is desirable. 5. Candidates are expected to bring strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and an ability to work both independently and within a team. 6. A strong interest in the mission of the United Nations and a commitment to its values are essential, as is the ability to collaborate with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additional InformationVisa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For in-person internships in the United States of America, persons who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant visa status (such as F-1 or J-1 visa), will be required to obtain a G-4 visa for a full-time (at least 35 hours per week) internship. Candidates who are on a non-immigrant visa status as students such as F-1 or J-1 visa with an employment authorization will only be able to intern on a part-time basis.
