Work LocationEgypt, Cairo Expected duration6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrg .Setting And Reporting The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions. This position of intern is in the Cairo hub of the OCHA Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA). The role of the regional office is to promote the organization’s mandate at the regional level. It serves as OCHA’s first line of surge response, leads OCHA’s emergency response preparedness work, and enhances partnerships for humanitarian purposes in the region. Under the oversight of the Deputy Head of Office, the incumbent will work with the information management team to achieve delivered tasks and responsibilities. Duties and Responsibilities The incumbent shall support the information management workstream within OCHA ROMENA Cairo in the following: 1. Assist in creating and maintaining reference maps and atlases for Gaza, Libya, and other countries of the region. 2. Process geospatial data, update GIS layers, and support in producing high-quality cartographic outputs. 3. Contributing to the maintenance and updating of OCHA’s geospatial databases and datasets. 4. Support the collection, cleaning, and validation of geospatial and non-geospatial datasets from various sources. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants of the internship programme must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: Be enrolled in or recently graduated (within the past 12 months) from a degree program in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Data Science, Information Management, Computer Science, Statistics, or a closely related field. Interviews will be conducted by the Hiring Manager directly for further consideration. A complete online application (cover letter and personal history profile/resume) is required. Skills: • While applicants are not required to have professional working experience for participation in the Programme, academic and/or practical experience in humanitarian issues and in the work of the United Nations is desirable. • The intern must have a good command of English and Arabic languages. • All applicants need to have a good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Teams. • Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms. • Experience in creating interactive dashboards using Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization tools is an asset. • Demonstrate the ability to work in a multicultural environment. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English and Arabic (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.
