About this position

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated environmental professional to join a group that provides technical support, direction, and leadership in ensuring that IDB Invest’s financed operations are environmentally and socially sustainable and align with its Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy (ESSP).

You will work in the Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance Division (SEG), which ensures which is responsible for ensuring that IDB Invest financed projects and other activities are environmentally and socially sustainable. SEG specialists provide IDB Invest and its clients with guidance on environmental and social issues and participate in project teams and deliver technical input on social and environmental aspects during project due diligence and supervision.

What you’ll do:

Support the origination, execution, and monitoring of projects. Provide risk assessments of IDB Invest’s transactions, identifying sensitive critical areas and issues to be addressed. Carry out physical climate risk assessments and natural disaster risk assessments of projects and assess proposed resiliency and other proposed mitigants. Provide and implement solutions to avoid, minimize, and mitigate adverse environmental and social risks and impacts. Conduct and participate in environmental and social due diligence processes of new investment proposals for IDB Invest’s consideration. Ensure that IDB Invest’s clients: i) understand the applicable environmental and social policies, guidelines, and project-specific requirements, and ii) have the necessary dedication and capacity to manage social and environmental impacts and risks adequately. Work on advancing IDB Invest’s climate risk approach (including procedure & policy updates, tools, guidance for environmental and social staff and clients, etc.) in line with the IDB Invest Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy and other relevant institutional commitments. Coordinate closely with other divisions on climate related work. Work with clients and other relevant units of the IDB Invest to mobilize technical and financial support to improve the environmental and social sustainability of the operations Provide internal and external clients with capacity building on SEG related topics by crafting and piloting information sharing schemes.

What you'll need

Education: Master’s degree in engineering, environmental management, law, environmental sciences, environmental or climate policy, or relevant field.

Experience: At least four (4) years minimum of relevant experience in environmental, climate and disaster risk work. environmental monitoring of development projects, environmental and social due diligence processes, environmental management, and environmental supervision. Experience in Latin America and the Caribbean region related to environmental and climate risk assessment work is highly beneficial.

Languages: Proficiency in English and Spanish, spoken and written, is highly desired. Additional knowledge of French and Portuguese is preferable.

Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

Staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
