JOB SUMMARY: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 250 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is seeking the inaugural Schwartz Fellow—a nine-month, full-time, paid fellowship for an emerging professional interested in the intersection of communications and public policy. The H. Andrew Schwartz Memorial Fellowship was established to honor CSIS’s longtime Chief Communications Officer, whose passion and creativity transformed how think tanks engage the world. Andrew’s professional expertise lay at the nexus of national security policy and communications, but his true calling was mentoring young professionals and helping them gain a foothold in Washington. This fellowship carries forward that spirit by creating a pathway for early-career professionals to contribute to one of Washington’s most innovative communications teams while receiving mentorship from CSIS scholars. This is a nine-month restricted fellowship. The biweekly rate will be based on an annualized salary of is $57,000. Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter to be considered for the position. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Schwartz Fellow will work as part of CSIS’s External Relations team to support the Center’s outreach across earned media, social media, and multimedia platforms. Responsibilities may include: • Collaborate with CSIS’s digital communications, media, and iDeas Lab teams to develop high-impact outreach strategies; • Work alongside CSIS research departments and scholars to craft communications plans around priority bodies of work; • Help with the development of engaging messaging around CSIS research and analysis; • Create compelling digital media content, including promotional materials for CSIS’s podcasts, events, videos, and publications; • Identify opportunities for innovative storytelling through data visualization, video, and audio; • Contribute to CSIS’s digital features, such as interactive reports and multimedia storytelling projects; • Support CSIS’s Journalism Bootcamp, mentoring students on storytelling in today’s media environment; • Assist with analytics tracking and performance optimization across CSIS’s digital platforms; and • Contribute to creative planning sessions with the communications team. Provides close supervision and active mentoring of associate and junior staff. KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE: • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public policy, international relations, or a related field; • Demonstrated interest in cutting-edge communications, public policy, and international affairs; • Strong writing and editing skills, with an ability to translate complex ideas into accessible messaging; • Familiarity with social media platforms and content creation tools (Canva, Adobe Suite, or equivalent); • Curiosity, initiative, and an eagerness to learn in and contribute to a fast-paced environment; • Collaborative spirit, positive attitude, and dedication to the values of bipartisanship, creativity, and public service, which defined Andrew Schwartz’s career.
