Terms of Reference1. General Background of Project or Assignment:
As per long term cooperation with the University of Michigan Law School and as per the agreed Memorandum of Understanding the UMLS fellow will provide valuable assistance to the PPLA section, particularly to the Legal Unit. The focus of the fellowship is the ongoing legal protection work of UNHCR vis-à-vis refugees and internally displaced persons and the fellowship will familiarize the fellow with the daily realities of UNHCR HQ.

3. Overall Purpose and Scope of Assignment:
Concise and detailed description of activities, including measurable outputs and delivery dates, impact indicators (what qualitative and quantitative results would be achieved upon completion of individual contract), performance indicators (time lines, value of the service rendered in relation to the cost, timeliness) and work plan
The overarching objectives of the internship – from the perspective of the intern – are (i) to gain a deeper knowledge of the work of UNHCR and the international legal frameworks governing the organization’s work in relation to refugee protection and the organization’s supervisory responsibility, and (ii) to practice and develop ‘professional working skills’, such as time management, prioritization of tasks, teamwork, presentation skills, legal research and drafting skills. The intern will be directly involved in various legal and policy aspects of PPLA’s work. The work may also include some routine elements (e.g. assisting with the preparation of meetings and note taking).
Possible tasks of the intern may include:
• conducting legal research and analysis and updating and/or drafting research papers on topics of relevance to UNHCR's policy and legal work on the protection of refugees in particular in the context of international law developments, legal doctrinal guidance, and domestic legislation;
• assisting with collecting and analyzing data on refugee treaties and legislation;
• assisting in the preparation of UNHCR’s Note on International Protection;
• editing position papers and other legal documents;
• where appropriate, attending meetings, workshops and seminars, taking notes and reporting back to the team.

Qualification and experience required (degree required, years of work experience, field of expertise, language required):
- Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree (PhD or Masters) in social sciences, anthropology, sociology, international/community development studies, law or a related field.
- 6 years work experience if with Bachelor’s degree; 4 years work experience if with post graduate degree in desired field of education.
- Preference will be given to candidates with previous work experience in humanitarian field
- Excellent analytical skills: including the capacity to develop analytical frameworks, collect and analyse qualitative and quantitative data from multiple sources to produce meaningful analysis for external reporting;
- Excellent drafting skills: with ability to write with clarity, high level of analysis, and conciseness;
- Experience in presenting analysis of results through visualisations;
- Demonstrated organisational skills: the ability to work independently and productively in a fast-paced environment;
- Flexible work attitude: the ability to work productively, independently, and to handle requests or issues as they arise;
- Communicates sensitively and effectively across different constituencies; and
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
