Terms of ReferenceThe External Relations Intern will join the External Relations Unit, responsible for communication, media, content development, donor relations, reporting, fundraising and interagency coordination, to highlight the needs of refugees across the country. The position will be for Rwandan nationals only for a period of six months. The intern will receive a stipend for the duration of the assignment.
The External Relations Intern will be under the supervision of the External Relations Officer based in Kigali, Rwanda. The main responsibilities of the role will include content creation, social media management, graphic design and administerial support to the External Relations team.
1. Duties and Responsibilities
The External Relations Intern will be required to undertake the following tasks:
- Assist in multi-media content creation for UNHCR Rwanda’s social media channels.
- Assist in media and social media monitoring and compile weekly media update.
- Assist in work relating to communication with communities including graphic design for products aimed at refugee communities.
- Support with the organization of campaigns, events, and other initiatives in support of UNHCR Rwanda’s strategic objectives.
- Provide administerial support to the External Relations team including translation.
- May be required to undertake missions to the field with external partners.
- Perform other related duties as required in support of the daily work of the External Relations team.
2. Required competencies:
- Language skills: written and spoken proficiency in English and Kinyarwanda
- Demonstrated interest in the field of refugees and the work of international organizations
- Good working knowledge of different social media platforms. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite products is also desired.
- Expertise in graphic design and content creation, including video editing
- Experience in event organization and management
3. Essential Minimum qualification and professional experience:
Education: Completed undergraduate degree – preferably in media, journalism, communications, design or related fields
4. Organizational Context
Rwanda has welcomed refugees for almost three decades, currently hosting approximately 135,000 refugees, asylum seekers, and other displaced populations who mainly fled from the DRC and Burundi. 91 percent of the population live in five refugee camps (Kigeme, Kiziba, Nyabiheke, Mugombwa, and Mahama) with the urban refugee population mainly residing in Kigali, Nyamata and Huye. Since September 2019, Rwanda has received about 1,700 refugees and asylum seekers from Libya through the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM).
UNHCR in Rwanda works closely with the Government of Rwanda (GoR) to provide international protection and assistance to refugees, asylum seekers, stateless populations and other people of concern based on an agreement signed in 1993.
UNHCR operates more in above five refugee camps and two reception centers (Gatore and Nyanza), and three Transit Centres (Gashora, Kijote, and Nyarushishi) across Rwanda.
These operations are managed by the country representation office in Kigali, a sub office in Kirehe District (for Mahama camp), and four field offices (Huye District for both Mugombwa and Kigeme camps, Karongi District for Kiziba camp, Kabarore for Nyabiheke camp and Nyamata covering the ETM Rwanda).
