Mission and objectivesMission and objectives UNICEF, the United Nations agency for children, works to protect the rights of every child, especially the most disadvantaged and those hardest to reach. Across more than 190 countries and territories, we do whatever it takes to help children survive, thrive and fulfil their potential. We provide and advocate for education, health and nutrition services. We Protect children from violence and abuse and bring clean water and sanitation to those in need. And keep them safe from climate change and disease. The world’s largest provider of vaccines, UNICEF also runs the world’s largest humanitarian warehouse. Before, during and after emergencies, we’re on the ground with life-saving help and hope. Context Guinea-Bissau is made up of diverse ethnic and religious groups in which harmful practices on children, in particular girls, including Child Marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are prevalent in several regions of the country. FGM is a serious human rights violation and a form of gender inequality that affects the lives of girls in many ways, this practice remains a critical concern, particularly in the regions of Gabu, Bafatá, and Quinara. The UNFPA–UNICEF Joint Programme (JP) in Guinea-Bissau collaborates with government institutions and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to support national efforts to eliminate FGM. This includes substantial support to the national coordination structure, (The National Committee for the Abandonment of Harmful Practices) Comité Nacional para o Abandono das Práticas Nefastas (CNAPN, Portuguese acronym), to enhance government and CSO accountability in implementing and monitoring the National Action Plan (2018–2022). Although the previous plan has concluded, efforts are currently underway to elaborate a new National Strategy and Action Plan for the period 2025–2030. To strengthen the evidence base and inform future programming, a comprehensive situational analysis was conducted. This assessment explores the prevalence, patterning, and drivers of FGM, and maps existing interventions aimed at prevention and response. The assignment will contribute to the achievement of SDG 5.3 Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation. The on line volunteers will summarize these document, collecting essential information for the target audience to understand.
