The IT Unit of the ILO Regional Office for Africa (RO-Africa), based in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, is part of the Executive Office. RO-Africa has overall political and management responsibility for the operations of the ILO's network of country offices and technical support teams for decent work, which covers 54 countries in the African region. The Information Technology Unit provides information technology services to users in all ILO offices with the support of information technology specialists in the various offices.
The position assists the regional team of the IT Unit in user support and in the monitoring of IT assets.
As an IT intern, you will be exposed to a range of areas such as network and systems support and management. The ILO offers a comprehensive learning experience that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application. This includes:
1. Skills development :
o System Administration: Interns learn how to administer an IT system and manage IT projects within schedule and budget constraints.
o Computer Network Management : Interns develop skills in network management, connectivity monitoring, and network data analysis and interpretation.
o User Support : Trainees understand how to use ITIL for user query management.
2. Practical experience :
o Real-world application : Interns apply their knowledge to a vast computer system and dense computer network, allowing them to better understand the complexities of international work problems.
o Problem Solving : Interns develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills by taking on the challenges of project implementation.
3. Professional growth :
o Networking: Interns build professional relationships with ILO staff, other interns and external stakeholders.
o Career Exploration : Interns explore different career paths in the fields of Computer Science at an international level.
You will gain experience working with the staff members of the IT Unit as well as the entire IT Department of the Organization who are involved in the following tasks:
- monitoring of the computer system.
- the provision of quality IT services to users.
- user support.
Interns learn essential skills, gain valuable experience, and contribute to meaningful projects, preparing them for successful careers in international development and labour standards.
Interns should expect to spend 10% to 20% of their time on administrative tasks.
Computer Science, Computer Security, Networks and Computer Systems, or related fields.
The applicant must be enrolled at least in a Master's degree programme or must have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago.
Relevant work experience and computer literacy would be an advantage.
Working knowledge (oral and written) of French or English.
Ability to adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and ability to work in a team.

Selection process:
Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), field offices will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department or field office within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.
If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the field office for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.
Stipend:
As an intern in the field, you will receive a monthly stipend from the ILO based on the cost of living in the area of the duty station, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive the appropriate stipend per month. Your travel to the duty station will be at your own expense.
Insurance:
Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
