Work LocationVienna/Hybrid Expected duration4-6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe internship is UNPAID and interns work five days per week (full time - 40 hours). The Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section (CPCJS), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) works to help States prevent crime and build the capacity of criminal justice systems within the framework of the rule of law. The Office serves as guardian of the UN standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice. The section's work spans multiple areas including, inter alia, community-based crime prevention, access to justice initiatives, addressing violence against women and children, supporting prosecution services and the judiciary, prison reform, human rights-based police reform, legal aid systems, and victims' services. The section provides technical assistance and guidance to Member States in alignment with UNODC's Strategy 2021-2025, particularly under Thematic Area 5 which focuses on crime prevention and criminal justice reform. The intern(s) will work under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section and under direct supervision of the relevant substantive officer. The intern(s) will contribute to the overall implementation of the Global Programme on People-centred Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Reform. The intern(s) will: • Conduct research on political and legal aspects of crime prevention and criminal justice reform • Contribute to the preparation of UNODC publications, background notes, reports, briefing materials, presentations • Prepare correspondences with Member State governments, talking points and speeches • Assist in staff members' preparation of technical assistance missions, workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences, including support to field offices • Attend and take notes at various meetings • Perform other tasks as necessary This vacancy announcement is for 4 internship positions starting in March 2025 for a period of four to six months and is designed to be in-person and hybrid full time (40 hours) but can be adjusted based on request by the successful candidate.
