Expected duration12 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of UNEP's Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. The Division promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The Resources and Markets Branch leads work central to the global sustainable consumption and production agenda - delivering scientific, credible, innovative solutions to make sustainability central in government policy frameworks, business direction-making and in peoples’ lives. The Branch works through an extensive network of stakeholders to ensure sustainability solutions are applicable at all levels. The UNEP Consumption and Production Unit promotes the adoption of sustainable production and consumption practices through building circularity into our economies by engaging governments, the business community, academia, and civil society organizations. The circularity team’s objective is to build the case for a just transition to a global circular economy and resource efficiency to achieve SCP and SDG 12 as a pathway to address the triple planetary crisis (climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution) and support the development of conducive circular policy frameworks. The incumbent will work in the circularity team of the Consumption and Production Unit, located in the Resources and Markets Branch, Industry and Economy Division. This post is a full-time position, preferably based in the UNEP Office in Paris, France. Under the supervision of the Programme Officer in charge, the incumbent will have the following responsibilities: • Deliver knowledge products (papers, webinars, policy mapping, etc.) on circular economy, in support of the work of GACERE • Lead the planning, content development, preparation of documents & presentations, and organization of GACERE-branded events (in-person/online, technical or ministerial events, etc.) • Lead external communications efforts of GACERE, inclusive of outreach to non-member governments • Provide technical inputs and advisory to the development, implementation and monitoring of national circular economy strategies, road maps and policy frameworks, in close collaboration with UNEP Divisions and Regional Offices • Manage content of the UNEP Circularity Platform • Deliver reporting to donors, as required. • Supports resource mobilization through the development of project concepts and proposals. • Performs other duties as required. Qualifications/special skillsEducation Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental economics, environmental or chemical engineering, business administration, social sciences, international development, environmental management, or a related field is required. Work Experience - A minimum of five years of relevant work experience in the field of sustainability/environmental public policy; - Proven work experience on circular economy, with a good understanding of life cycle approaches, including experience in working with public-sector officials and providing them technical advice on circular economy and sustainable value chains; - Excellent research skills to analyse and compile relevant information from desktop research and stakeholder interviews; - Excellent writing skills in drafting technical documents and reports, by summarising critical information from research and consultations, and tailor the language and styles towards policy makers; proven experience in authoring publications is desirable; - Excellent organizational skills are required - Work experience at regional or international levels is desirable; - Knowledge of the UN System is an advantage. A minimum of five years of relevant work experience in the field of sustainability/environmental public policy. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations.
