Initial duration of contract: 1 year with the possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and satisfactory performance.
The mission of the Unit on the Cultural Heritage Protection Treaties (CHP) is to ensure the effective implementation of the 1954 Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and its two (1954 and 1999) Protocols, and its related programmes.
Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture (ADG/CLT), the general supervision of the Director of Culture and Emergencies Entity, and the direct supervision of the Head of Cultural Heritage Protection Treaties Unit, the incumbent shall assist in the overall coordination of monitoring and assessment of damage to cultural property in Ukraine, including all World Heritage properties, Tentative list sites and Cultural Properties under Enhanced Protection within the framework of two UNESCO/Japanese Funds-in-Trust-supported projects entitled ‘Support to Ukraine in the Field of Culture and Education - Emergency Response for World Heritage and Cultural Property: Damage Assessment and Protection” and “Assessment of the impact of the conflict on the cultural heritage of Ukraine”.
In particular, the incumbent will:
Compile and maintain the list of cultural properties damaged as a result of the armed conflict in Ukraine and ensure their publication on the website of UNESCO;
Assist in coordination with national and international partners involved in the assessment of damage to cultural property in Ukraine;
Draft comprehensive briefings and reports, including documents to be submitted to the statutory and governing bodies, on the assessment of damage to cultural property in Ukraine and communicate them to relevant services of UNESCO.
Assists in the implementation of emergency actions and the planning for recovery, including through the identification of sites for priority intervention;
Assist in the assessment of damage in other emergency situations, as the need arises;
Assist in other activities related to the protection of cultural property under the 1954 Hague Convention and its two Protocols.
Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in the field of culture, human and social sciences, or related fields.
