Work LocationManama, Bahrain Expected duration2 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganizational Setting UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN (United Nations) General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. It is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. The UN-Habitat Country Programme in Bahrain is supporting the efforts of the Government in achieving sustainable urbanization and harnessing on the power of cities as places of opportunities, inclusion and wellbeing for all. UN-Habitat’s portfolio in Bahrain is increasingly connected to the climate agenda and focused on urban sustainability. With Bahrain’s most recent commitments to the climate goals and specially to reach net zero by 2060, key strategies are anchored in the implementation of the National Afforestation Plan (2022-2035) and its goal to increase the tree count from 1.8 million trees to 3.6 million by 2035, as well as quadruple the mangrove area. UN-Habitat expertise is also contributing to enhance data and support informed decision-making in urban development. UN-Habitat is supporting these efforts in several ways, including through building capacities, developing tools for the design of the urban environment, policies and guidelines as well as raising awareness. The overall goal of our work is to support the transition towards more sustainable and climate-adapted urban systems, and to improve environmental quality by increasing the quality and use of green public spaces with direct effects on the health and wellbeing of the residents in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In implementing its projects, UN-Habitat and its experts work with key Government institutions to plan, coordinate, implement, and support various activities related to the national programmes. The primary beneficiaries include government authorities and experts, decision-makers, as well as the general public whose awareness is raised and living conditions improved. To support its growing portfolio of projects, UN-Habitat Bahrain seeks a part-time architect & urban planner expert to support project management, programme coordination, data collection and analysis, mapping, design of tools, reports and studies for building sustainable communities and urban settings. Reporting Line The candidate will work under the supervision of the Head of Country Programme in Bahrain. He/she will engage on a regular basis with relevant institutions, partners, researchers, to ensure the activities are developed with the inputs of all relevant partners. Duties and responsibilities - Compile and review available data and documentation related to urban development, urban trends, design, built environment, government projects and programmes and other related areas of work as needed. - Drawing on UN-habitat’s tools and methodologies, support capacity building and training sessions, missions in support of all projects and engage with technical staff, experts and stakeholders in preparation for such. - Provide technical support as needed to project team on assessments to be carried out with public and private sector actors and government authorities. - Liaise with other experts in the different projects, map and take inputs that will be added to the training and capacity programme. - Coordinate with all stakeholders and meeting with aligned Ministries, relevant municipalities, community groups, targeted beneficiaries, international and local NGOs and CBOs, etc. and conduct needs assessment which will feed into developing new proposals. - Prepare and support technical missions and advocacy activities. - Prepare concept notes and project documents, spatial profiles, policy documents, and strategies. - Elaborate maps, urban design outputs and spatial data illustration. - Provide technical inputs to awareness raising campaigns and design outputs. - Contribute in development of design guidelines and design of pilot projects. - Elaborate briefs, proposals, reports and presentations. - Support the development and implementation of the UN Bahrain Cooperation Framework. - Support as needed in the implementation of projects and related activities undertaken by the country programme. Qualifications/special skillsFirst-level university degree in architecture or urban planning, engineering (and/or related fields) that is relevant for sustainable urban development and urban planning and design is required. Two years of relevant work experience in the field of urban planning, design, architecture (and/or related fields) is required. Direct proven experience in drawing and preparing plan graphical material using computer assisted design tools is required. Strong graphic representation skills are required. The candidate has a portfolio of plans and designs which he/she is the author is desirable. Good working knowledge of standard office software and specialized computer applications related to urban planning and design, including Auto CAD is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in oral and written English is required. Oral and written in Arabic is an asset.
