Through drawing together cooperation with committed partners, relevant stakeholders, and urban actors, including at all levels of government as well as the private sector, UN-Habitat is applying its technical expertise, normative work and capacity development to implement the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 11 – to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Mandated by the UN General Assembly in 1978 to address the issues of urban growth, it is a knowledgeable institution on urban development processes, and understands the aspirations of cities and their residents. For forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) was established in 2011 in Cairo, Egypt, and provides technical cooperation and capacity building for 18 countries across the Arab region. The Regional Office promotes and implements policies, programs and operational projects in UN-Habitat’s focus areas, at regional, national, and local levels, aimed at achieving sustainable urban development in the countries of the region, and provide technical cooperation services, upon request from governments. UN-Habitat ROAS covers all the operational activities and projects in 18 countries across the Arab Region; currently, with 12 active country programmes. This position is located at the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States in Cairo, Egypt. The incumbent will work Uunder the direct supervision of the Senior Humanitarian Affairs Officer and the overall supervision of the Regional Representative for Arab States, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: Responsibilities1. Supporting the implementation of UN-Habitat ROAS Strategic plan and programme activities a. Undertake research and provide background information to support formulation of regional programmes. b. Work in coordination with relevant branches at HQ to support mainstreaming relevant themes into ROAS projects as regional focal point. c. Initiate regional activities to enhance women and youth engagement in urban issues in the Arab region, in cooperation with partners. d. Identify opportunities for new programme/project development including joint programming with UN agencies. e. Analyse, research, and provide inputs for preparation of substantive briefs on possible areas of cooperation and identify opportunities to initiate new projects. f. Ensure coordination and networking with UN agencies, clients, stakeholders, and programme partners. g. Assist in the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, talking points, inputs to annual reports and publications. h. Provide substantive support to events and other meetings, conferences, assist with proposing agenda topics, identifying proposed participants, preparation of background documents and presentations. i. Undertake outreach activities; participate in the organization of workshops, seminars; participate and assist in making presentations on assigned topics/activities. j. Support and coordination of field missions, including provision of substantive support, data collection. 2. Establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships and supporting resource mobilization. a. Support ROAS donor intelligence and resource mobilization for regional and country-level programmes b. Conduct mapping of donors, donor strategies and priorities of assistance, and monitoring of funding opportunities. c. Conduct research and analysis of information on existing and new partners. d. Contribute to the design and implementation of UN-Habitat ROAS partnerships and resource mobilization strategy. e. Develop ideas and concepts for possible areas of cooperation with relevant UN Agencies and counterparts, as well as funding opportunities for ongoing and new programme and projects. f. Support the preparation of donor briefs, partnership profiles and other related products. 3. Data-related responsibilities a. Contributes to the collection and analysis of data and identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. b. Documents requirements and background information used for data analysis. c. Undertake other duties as may be assigned by his/her supervisor. Work ExperienceA minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required. Experience in housing and sustainable urban development, with a focus on participatory processes and cross-cutting issues (human rights, gender, youth, climate change is required. Experience in urban development paradigms and socio-political situation of the Arab Region and the respective sub-regions is desirable. Experience in the United Nations System or any similar international organization is desirable. One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
