The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) seeks to recruit an Assistant Accountant who will support the accounting and finance team in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations, and facilitating the smooth operation of the CIMMYT’s financial processes. The Assistant Accountant will assist in the preparation and reconciliation of financial statements, manage accounts payable and receivable, and provide support during audits and financial reviews.

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is an autonomous, non-profit making, international scientific organization operating under the aegis of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). More specifically its mission is to encourage, support and undertake activities to improve the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of maize and wheat systems in the interest of the resource poor in developing countries.

Main duties & responsibilities:

Liaise with ILRI’s financial services in financial recording and administration for the CIMMYT projects, Integrate the project budget lines expenditures, such as staff salaries, office rent, IT charges, bank charges, and purchase of vehicles, into the CIMMYT’s enterprise resource system (QUICKBOOKS) system, Consolidate financial reports received from ILRI and compile monthly financial summaries, Monitor cash flows, initiated cash transfer procedures from CIMMYT to ILRI, and maintain a positive account balance according to host agreements, Carry out correct recording of project expenditures and on time in the CIMMYT’s QUICKBOOKS system following accountant’s relevant checklist; ensure expenditures are charged to correct budget codes, Assist the Accountant and the Program and Administrative Manager in budget expenditure monitoring and other analysis when requested, Ensure correct and up-to-date time administration of staff in CIMMYT’s QUICKBOOKS system, Seek approval from the Scientist and implement procurement processes of the project, in full compliance with ILRI’s or CIMMYT’s procurement processes, rules and regulations, Assist the Accountant in drafting project correspondences of administrative nature, Sort and file physical documents and electronic files for ease of access when needed, Arrange travel and accommodation for staff and visitors, Record and maintain all fixed assets, including acquisition cost, location, useful life, and depreciation and ensure all assets are accurately tagged and inventoried, Update the fixed asset register regularly to reflect new acquisitions, disposals, transfers, and adjustments. Perform regular reconciliation of the fixed asset register with the general ledger, Coordinate with other departments to verify the physical existence and condition of fixed assets, Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards (e.g., IFRS, GAAP) and internal policies related to fixed assets, Assist in the preparation of year-end financial statements and other regulatory filings, Prepare and submit fixed asset reports to management and auditors as required, Prepare and submit fixed asset reports to management and auditors as required, Perform any other related duties as may be required.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

Bachelors’ degree or Diploma in Accounting or Finance Knowledge in relevant field and relevant technical training

Experience:

BA degree with two years of relevant experience Or Diploma with five years of relevant experience Work experience in an international NGO or an international organization

Skills:

Experience in using accounting software or ERP system Knowledge in audit and taxation Proficiency in the use of office / business applications

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position level: HG 12

Minimum Base salary: Birr 35,071 per month

Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
