About this position
The Environmental and Social Solutions Unit (VPS/ESG) is responsible for ensuring that IDB-financed projects and other activities are environmentally and socially sustainable and comply with the Bank’s environmental and social policies. Within this context, the IDB has developed the IDB Atlas Enterprise platform, utilizing the ArcGIS Enterprise model, to manage geospatial data across the organization. The platform encompasses various applications and layers, with the Screening App being particularly impactful and widely used by VPS/ESG specialists. As one of the leading units for Geographic Information Systems (GIS), VPS/ESG aims to drive modernization, maximize GIS potential, and promote broader adoption of this technology within the Bank. We are actively seeking a highly motivated professional to join the VPS/ESG Innovation and Technology group to support the unit as an ArcGIS specialist. You will play a crucial role in administering, operating, and upgrading the currently implemented GIS tools within VPS/ESG and the IDB.
What you’ll do:
- Administration / Management: Responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining geospatial information system databases, specifically the Environmental and Social information in IDB Atlas an ArcGIS Enterprise platform, in collaboration with the IDB’s Information Technology GIS team.
- Support to operations: Overseeing regular maintenance and updates of GIS tools and layers. Conducting geospatial analysis and presenting findings through datasets, visualizations, and models. Utilizing vector, raster, drone images, 3D models, and other formats to create innovative analyses supporting IDB operations.
- GIS tools improvement: Reimagining the Screening App, introducing new functionalities, streamlining workflows through automated analysis and programming, and exploring AI features.
- GIS Strategy: Contributing to enhancing a comprehensive GIS strategy for VPS/ESG by leveraging insights and experiences from lessons learned. Support in the integration with the bank's environmental and social information management system, ESG Compass.
- Capacity Building: Participating in capacity-building initiatives, and training colleagues and partners in ArcGIS best practices. This effort aims to enhance sector operations and expand the impact of GIS within the unit.
What you'll need
- Education: Master’s degree in a relevant quantitative and computational field, such as Geography, GIS, Computer Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or a related area.
- Experience: At least 5 years of relevant professional experience (with ArcGIS and other relevant tools/systems).
- Languages: Proficiency in English and Spanish.
- Programming: Proficiency using Python and JavaScript.

- Experience in analyzing geospatial data and creating map-based information with Esri software including ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, their associated APIs, and Developer SDKs (Python, JS, REST APIs, ArcPy, Pandas).
- Experience leveraging ArcGIS Dashboard, Insights, Survey123, StoryMaps, Experience Builder (ExB), Web AppBuilder (WAB).
- Ability to develop and maintain databases of geospatial data.
- Ability to uphold data management and governance.
- Strong aptitude for conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis.
- Experience translating the unit’s needs to appropriate GIS technologies.

- Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries.
- Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
