This position is within the Operational Support Section (OSS) of the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 (IIIM), located in Geneva. The position is under the general supervision of the Arabic Reviser, IIIM.
Temporary appointment under the When Actually Employed (WAE) modality may be offered to the successful applicant, who will be placed on the IIIM Roster as Arabic interpreter.
IIIM-Syria will assess the candidates' applications in order to determine whether they are eligible, and whether they meet the requirements for rostering for the temporary position and short-term assignments, as well as the technical requirements and competencies outlined in the present announcement. Such assessment will be undertaken through a comparative analysis of the applications. The assessment will include a competency-based interview. Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities may include:
- Providing interpretation into Arabic of speeches given in English.
- Servicing up to eight meetings per week, usually of no more than three hours' duration.
- Assignment to sensitive meetings and possibly functioning as a team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting. Competencies

Hold a first-level university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) in a language-related field.
Alternatively, applicants must hold a first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status at which Arabic is the language of instruction and have 50 days of work experience as conference interpreters.
Work Experience
A minimum of 50 proven days of work in conference interpretation into Arabic is required only in the absence of a formal university qualification in a language-related field. Languages
Have a perfect command of Arabic, which is expected to be their main language. (\"Main language should be understood to be the language into which the applicant is best able to interpret.)
Have an excellent knowledge of English.
Note: 'Perfect command' is defined as four \"fluent\" ratings out of the four language fields and excellent command' is defined as at least two \"confident\" ratings out of the four language fields.
Applicants' claims to knowledge of any of the official languages of the United Nations must be supported by relevant documentation attached to their application. Assessment
All applicants should submit with their applications a minimum of 250-word essay in Arabic in lieu of a cover note, explaining why they wish to work as a freelance interpreter at the United Nations. Applications without the required 250-word essay in Arabic may not be taken into consideration.

The purpose of the present advertisement is to invite applications to the IIIM Language Roster examination for Arabic interpreters. The aim is to expand the number of qualified Arabic interpreters on the roster for emptiest and temporary appointments. Selected candidates will be working remotely.

As indicated in ST/Al/2010/4/Rev.l , temporary appointments may be granted for a single or cumulative period of less than one year to meet seasonal or peak workloads and specific short-term requirements. Temporary appointments for interpreters are governed by agreements with the Association international des interprets de conference (AllC), whereby a temporary appointment may be granted for a maximum of 729 days {or 521 working days) within a 27-month period at the same duty station. Those granted temporary appointments usually need to work on United Nations premises.
United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
