UNEP’s Asia and the Pacific Office geographically serves 41 countries across the region to promote and implement sustainable development solutions. It assists countries of the region pursue sustainability, particularly in their implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including technical expertise, facilitating access to finance, undertaking cutting-edge science-policy assessments, offering advisory services and strengthening laws, policies, management and governance. UNEP works with national and local authorities, civil society, other UN organizations, research institutions and the private sector to catalyze the efficient use of the region’s natural assets and reduce the degradation of the environment. UNEP India focuses on support India in realizing the objectives and actions under the UN Country Sustainable Development Framework, supported by the regional and global programmes of UNEP. Air pollution is a matter of high concern globally and in India because of its impact on public health, crop production, weather, climate, ecosystems, heritage, and economic productivity and efficiency. The World Air Quality Report 2019 indicates that with respect to the ambient concentrations of PM2.5, half of the world’s 50 most polluted cities are in India. However, air pollution is not only an urban issue; as air is a free-flowing entity, increasing impacts of degrading air quality are felt at a regional scale in India, particularly over the Indo-Gangetic plains. Given the number of stakeholders working on this important issue, it is important that they are brought together to synergize and effectively channelize resources towards the common goal of air quality management. With this in mind, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), with support from Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) have launched a national action-oriented Air Quality Action Forum (AQAF) for facilitating coordination and support to the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and its objectives. The Forum is now entering its second phase of delivery with renewed mandate and focus with new partnerships. In order to oversee the functioning of the forum, a consultant is needed for day-to-day coordination with all stakeholders including government officials, civil society organizations, research organizations, inter-governmental organizations, multilateral organizations, private sector, funding agencies and philanthropic organizations, to map out expertise and align efforts within the platform for assisting the Government of India for effective implementation of national clean air programme. The consultant will report to Head, UNEP India Country Office Qualifications/special skills• An advanced university degree in environmental science, pollution control or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with three additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • Minimum of five-year of professional experience; in air pollution management, Environment management or related field is required. • Experience in engaging with different stakeholders in the related field is desirable. • Experience in planning and execution of outreach activities both online and offline is desirable. • Experience in dealing with developing countries and international institutions is an asset. • Experience in working with the Government of India or other national institutions in India is desirable. Special knowledge & skills: • Familiarity with project management tools and reporting cycles • Ability to coordinate multistakeholder events • Good interpersonal, written, and communication skills Languages• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
