Work LocationRemote - Home based Expected duration6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganizational Setting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. A key agreement opened for signature at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention has three objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal, Canada and is administered by UNEP. This post is remote. Duties and Responsibilities The consultant will work under the Implementation Services Division in coordination with the ABS Unit and the direct supervision of the Associate Information Systems Officer, and under the overall guidance of the Information Systems Officer in charge of the IT Development team. The Secretariat and its partners have already identified the following specific tasks and activities to be addressed: • Support work on interoperability including documentation. • Support countries to understand and use SCBD interoperability mechanisms. • Support work on the development of the Knowledge Base for the clearing-houses. • Support work on record management functionality related to keeping records accurate and up-to-date. • Support the development of the search. • Support general improvements to the user experience (UX) / user interface (UI). • Any other related development work as required. Specific priorities and activities will be decided by the Associate Information Systems Officer supervising the project in collaboration with the ABSCH and BCH Programme. All tasks will be developed in close collaboration with the IT and CHM Unit. Qualifications/special skillsAcademic Qualifications Completion of a University degree is required. Areas of study in Computer Science, Information Communication Technology or a related field is desirable. Working Experience At least five years of experience in web development is required. Solid understanding of the concepts of user experience (UX), user interface design principles and conceptual design is required. Expert knowledge in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, knowledge of Bootstrap, jQuery and AngularJS/Vue 3/React, REST API is required. Skills: • Excellent written and verbal communication skills is required. • Ability to work independently as an active member of a team is required. • Confidence and productivity in their work is required. • Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently is required. Proven experience in the development of web applications, design and technical implementation of user interfaces in a web-based environment is desirable. Competencies required: Communication: Good spoken and written communication skills, including the ability to liaise with technical staff and present information in a clear and concise style. Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
