The United Nations Development Programme is the global development network of the United Nations system that is on the ground in 177 countries, with its Headquarters in New York, USA. The Bureau for Management Services (BMS) is a central Bureau tasked with the development of corporate strategies, policies, tools and systems in key cross-cutting management areas. Drawing on sound analytics and a risk-management approach, BMS supports the achievement of development results through management advice, innovative business solutions, and other corporate services in line with international best practices and evolving needs and expectations of development partners. BMS also ensures policy adherence in operations management within UN Rules & Regulations, safeguarding UNDP’s accountability vis-à-vis Member States and other stakeholders.

UNDP is an operational backbone to the UN system: providing payroll, financial transactions, common premises, treasury investment, procurement, legal services to UN agencies. UNDP provides IT support for 13 UN entities with 40,000 United Nations and external users of the UNDP’s Atlas ERP system, as well as information and communication technology (ICT) and application solutions for the United Nations field presence. To support the UNDP Digital Strategy 2019-2021 and enable the digital transformation of the organization, the office of Information and Technology Management (ITM) is tasked with developing and operating the enabling corporate technology platforms and providing related services that power the digital transformation including: (1) advice, administration and acceleration services to promote delivery of maximum business value of each platform; (2) a global service desk operation; (3) and outreach services to promote knowledge sharing and effective, agile planning and governance of technology development and utilization.

Under the overall guidance of the Chief, Digital Corporate Platforms, and the supervision of the digital innovation platform lead, the Software Engineer Associate (Front-end Focus) will be part of the digital innovation platform initiative, centering on building the platform, providing support, and onboarding the users to use the platform in supporting their app creation and development. In this position, you will be working with the project lead in developing the platform and automated process to support the provisioning of resources to provide a seamless experience to platform users in transitioning from traditional development practice to a full modern DevOps application development. In addition, you will be providing support to the platform users both in guiding as well as hands-on support to ensure they are able to take full advantage of the platform including support in creating a build release pipeline for the app. This position will also be supporting the mobile app publishing pipeline in releasing the mobile app to both android and apple store.

 

  • Responsible for designing, coding, unit testing, building, deploying, and supporting application software development, focusing on the front-end and UI area, in a global dynamic environment across functions and projects.
  • Conduct peer code reviews, bug bashes and design reviews with the team.
  • Assists other developer in the office community in the creation of application, integration, and data architecture.
  • Collaborate with all units to bring new concepts and technologies that can support and optimize UNDP digital tech innovation.

Education:

  • Secondary education with specialized computer software engineering, software programming, information technology training or related field with minimum of 7 years’ experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field is a plus.

Experience:

  • 7 years of relevant experience in full stack development with a minimum 3 years of relevant experience in front-end development experience
  • Having hand on experience in developing modern web application with DevOps pipeline for built, test and release in a collaborative environment following agile/scrum methodology is preferred
  • Strong programming skills with minimum 1 year of experience in hands-on programming in HTML, CSS, JS, and NodeJS or other open cross platform languages.
  • Mastering source code control and collaboration with Git
  • Good understanding of modern web technology including HTML5 and single page web app
  • Mastering source code control and collaboration with Git
  • Very good understanding of UI/UX layout and graphic design
  • Having hands- on experience in graphic design is a plus.

Language requirements:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Working knowledge of French or Spanish is an asset.
