Senior Field Research Officer (Internal#120/2025)

Emerging infectious diseases such as Nipah virus and other bat-borne zoonoses pose significant threats to public health in Bangladesh and globally. The Programme for Emerging and Re-emerging Infections (PEI) under the Infectious Diseases Division (IDD) conducts field-based surveillance, ecological research, and epidemiological studies to understand the factors driving pathogen spillover from animals to humans. Through a One Health approach, PEI aims to identify transmission pathways, assess risk factors, and design targeted interventions to prevent and control emerging zoonotic infections. These efforts contribute to strengthening national surveillance systems and enhancing global health security.

Brief Description of Position:

The Senior Field Research Officer will report to the Assistant Scientist and will be mainly responsible for supporting the implementation, coordination, and monitoring of field research activities. The position will contribute to effective project planning, high-quality data collection and management, and timely reporting to achieve the objectives of ongoing research projects in compliance with protocol and organizational guidelines.

The specific areas of responsibilities include:

Design project roadmap and ensure timely delivery of key goals and results; Plan and organize field activities, including training of field staff, supervision of data collection and management of logistics to ensure smooth project implementation; Collect biological specimens (bats, rats, mice, shrews, and other wild/domestic animals) in compliance with biosafety protocols and guide the team in safe and accurate field procedures; Supervise field and office staff, assign daily tasks and provide on-the-job training and performance feedback to strengthen team capacity and field data quality; Monitor all the collected data is complete, correct and follows approved research methods and safety standards; Work with the Principal Investigator in designing study methodologies, developing research protocols and preparing project budgets; Seek necessary approvals from relevant committees (Division Office, Finance, RRC, ERC, and Animal Ethics Committee) for research protocols and project-related documentation; Communicate and coordinate with national and international partners like DLS, IEDCR, BLRI, and the Forest Department to ensure smooth collaboration and field facilitation; Oversee data entry, check accuracy and help analyze the results using software like Excel, SPSS, or STATA; Prepare progress reports on assigned research activities and assist the PI in drafting scientific manuscripts, presentations and technical reports; Keep track of field expenses, prepare cost estimates and expenditure forecasts for project activities, and monitor effective utilization of project resources;

Required qualifications and experience:

DVM with a Master’s degree in Epidemiology/ Public Health/ Microbiology; At least 5 years of work experience in relevant field; Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in bat research and biological specimen collection from bats, rats, mice, shrews, and other wild/domestic animals, as well as expertise in zoonotic disease ecology, field-based surveillance, and One Health research;

Contract type and duration:

CSA basis for 4 (four) months with a possibility of extension subject to availability of fund and performance.

Salary & benefits:

Tk. 79,569/-per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances Festival bonus, income tax paid by icddr,b and subsidized canteen; Transport and daycare facilities are subject to space availability.
