Around 35 million people live in the coastal regions of Bangladesh, where water salinity is a major public health concern linked to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and other environmental health risks. “The NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Non-Communicable Diseases and Environmental Change in Bangladesh”, hosted by icddr,b, is working to address this challenge. The Centre aims to assess whether strengthening primary health care for NCDs and introducing low-cost drinking water salinity mitigation solutions can reduce the risk of cardiovascular and kidney diseases in selected coastal areas of Khulna and Satkhira districts.
Position Description:
The Research Officer will be reporting to the Deputy Project Coordinator (DPC) and Research Capacity Strengthening Lead for Bangladesh. The Fellow is expected to contribute to environment health research under the guidance of the DPC. She/he will assist DPC and be primarily responsible for the following duties and responsibilities-
Conduct scoping review; Create GIS mapping for drinking water sources; Participate in preparing survey tools and data collection program; Provide training to survey data collectors; Conduct data collection and analysis for Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) and Extreme Weather Events; Conduct periodic field visits to understand operational challenges and how to mitigate those challenges; Support team in conducting co-production of water salinity mitigation technology; Conduct periodic quality assurance of data collection, and conduct preliminary data analysis of the environmental and hydrogeological data; Liaise with relevant local stakeholders, including government and non-government actors (in health and water sectors), local government representatives, and NGOs. Support the supervisor in developing data collection tools, SOPs of data collection and quality assurance; Work with PI and other team members to write study reports and articles for peer-reviewed journals; Attend team meetings and present study achievements, updates and challenges;
