Our Work In Sierra Leone:

Partners In Health (PIH) began supporting the government of Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola epidemic in October 2014. Recognizing the large need for continued investments in the health system after Ebola, PIH is committed to long-term health system strengthening in support of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), guided by the same principles as our emergency response and our work around the world: public sector accompaniment, integrated and comprehensive services, social justice, nimbleness and flexibility, partnership, community ownership, and evidence-based interventions. In the aftermath of the epidemic, PIH is committed to supporting the delivery of comprehensive health services in Sierra Leone, from the community level to the health center and to referral hospitals.

Position Overview

The Residency Coordinator will provide high-level support to Partners In Health’s (PIH) diverse psychiatric teaching and professional development programs. The Residency Coordinator will support all training, clinical service and supervision, management, curriculum development, communications, recruitment, partnerships, research, and administrative aspects of the Psychiatry Residency at the Sierra Leone Psychiatric Teaching Hospital (SLPTH). Time will be spent in collaboration with educators from the West African College of Physicians, the Mass General Brigham (MGB), Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and the Sierra Leone Teaching Hospital’s Complex, in addition to other collaborators and stakeholders. The Residency coordinator will be working alongside the Psychiatry residency consultant to ensure full alignment with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC) Strategic plan about training the next generation of psychiatrists in the country.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Strengthen internal systems to develop and track academic calendars and rotating didactic schedules
• Liaise with the Partners in Health Sierra Leone (PIH-SL) team to streamline logistics for and support events related to recruitment, admissions, scholarships, conferences, student profiles, matriculation, stipends, and graduation for the SLPTH Residency
• Streamline communications across all academic partners – including but not limited to Mass General Brigham, Cross-Site Mental Health Team, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, West African College of Physicians, Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex, and the PIH-SL Mental Health team
• Manage programmatic logistics to support academic experiences such as additional academic topics, upcoming testing schedules, psychiatry rotations, curriculum development, capacity building, supply chain, partnerships, communications, and strategic planning
• Work closely with the PIH-SL team to track the programmatic and administrative needs to meet accreditation rules as set by the Ministry of Health
• Troubleshoot and problem-solve any challenges related to academic training and program implementation in close collaboration with the Sierra Leone mental health team.
• Work with the Cross-Site Mental Health team to strengthen collaboration between the SLPTH Residency and hospitals, academic departments, and medical institutions, including but not limited to Mass General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School.
• Keep abreast of academic initiatives across the African continent and explore areas of potential collaboration, including the West African College Curriculum, University of Global Health Equity (UGHE), and/or Ashesi.
• Work in close collaboration with the Sierra Leone Human Resources, Policy & Partnerships, and Mental Health team to host visits (either donor and/or Faculty) and prepare high-level program overviews and reports for high-profile partners
• Work with program leadership and PIH SL Communications team to engage with advocacy partners and share, promote, and disseminate messages through various formats, including participating in advocacy forums as needed.
• He/she should be ready to take up any other relevant tasks as instructed by the supervisor.

  Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with experience in health care management required, with Master’s Degree preferred (E.g. MPH, MSW or MPA).
  • At least 2-3 years of program coordination experience required.
  • Experience in formal accredited education programs in Sierra Leone is desirable
  • Strong experience in the development and management of budgets, understanding of financial systems, and preparation of financial reports required.
  • Experience coordinating culturally diverse staff on long-term goals and day-to-day activities
  • Demonstrated ability to assess priorities and take initiative on multiple complex tasks.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member, an ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Ability to navigate through and problem-solve within complex systems.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, and Zoom
    • Excellent interpersonal and rapport-building skills required.
    • Passionate about community building, sustainability and instilling a community-based approach to global mental health.
    • Formal experience in clinical and/or public mental health services, teaching and formal accredited education programs, program management, and/or research is seen as an asset.
    • High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Office
      • Passion for PIH’s mission and demonstrated commitment to social justice and human rights.
