UNHCR has been operational in Egypt since 1954 after the Government of Egypt and UNHCR signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Since then, UNCHR has provided protection services including all aspects of registration, documentation, refugee status determination and resettlement to those who are forcibly displaced.
As the end of August 2024, there were 760,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers in Egypt, more than double the number from one year before with major conflicts across its borders. Refugees in Egypt live in urban settings across the major cities, with most new arrivals coming from Sudan.
Since the onset of the conflict in Sudan in April 2023, UNHCR has observed a fivefold increase in Sudanese individuals registering as refugees, mainly women and children. As of mid-May, UNHCR has provided registration appointments to more than 725,000 individuals forced to flee Sudan, with 56% of them fully registered. UNHCR is leading the Sudan response, using the Refugee Coordination Model and involving the whole spectrum of UN agencies, NGOs and the Government of Egypt (GoE).
Through direct implementation and partners, UNHCR works to support refugees and asylum-seekers with protection services, cash and in-kind assistance, health, education and livelihoods programmes.
The intern will join the Protection Assistance Service units at UNHCR’s offices in Cairo. The Protection team assists the Office in providing quality, timely and effective protection responses to the needs of populations of concern. S/he is also required to assist the office in its reporting requiring internally and externally.
The position
Under the supervision of a Senior Protection Officer, the successful candidate will provide reporting support to the Protection team, including the support to the Protection Working Group (PWG), Mixed Movement Working Group (MMWG), and other inter-agency coordination fora that is (co) led by the UNHCR Protection Unit. To achieve this, the incumbent will need to build and maintain effective channels of communication with protection and assistance colleagues. The support will help the Legal team meet its reporting requirements both internally and externally, including to UNHCR’s donors, through the External Relations Unit.
The position will provide the incumbent to exposure to the workings of a key United Nations agency at a critical time for the region, particularly faced with the Sudan situation and its resulting large-scale influx into Egypt. The incumbent will attend team and coordination meetings and travel between UNHCR’s offices in Cairo as part of their reporting responsibilities.
Duties and responsibilities
• Keep abreast of all developments in the activity to prepare appropriate reports, briefing and background notes, and other documentation as required;
• Liaise closely with all Units in order to gather and collate accurate data about refugees and assistance activities;
• Consolidate and analyse data on Protection activities in order to facilitate the preparation of periodic reports, i.e. Sitreps, activity-specific reports, as required;
• Prepare and distribute minutes of coordination meetings, including of the PWG.
Minimum qualifications required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.
Desirable qualifications and skills
• A Law degree, including the study of international law and refugee protection.
• Strong computer skills (MS office at a minimum)
• Native level English;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including strong legal drafting skills;
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as within a team;
• Good time management skills;
