Dhaka Hospital was established by icddr,b in 1962 primarily to meet the urgent need to treat patients, particularly children, with severe diarrhoeal disease. It has since grown into a nationally important centre treating more than 200,000 patients a year. It acts as a beacon illustrating what can be achieved by a hospital facility even within a developing world setting. Dhaka Hospital provides an infrastructure for a wide range of clinical research projects. It also plays a critical role in areas such as disease surveillance, monitoring for antimicrobial resistance and clinical training. Dhaka Hospital offers a full range of services, particularly for diarrhoeal and respiratory disease, with infants and children representing a high proportion of patients. It delivers outstanding care, saving an estimated 40,000 lives that might otherwise be lost every year.

Position description:

The position holder will manage triage, examine, perform nursing care, and provide treatment to the patients come through the emergency and outpatient department with the objective of enabling the Hospitals for effective management of patients within the icddr,b procedures, and protocols. The specific areas of responsibilities are detailed below:

Receives patients, performs triage, takes ailment history, completes physical examination, assess medical problems, dehydration status, determine therapy and assign bed; Take and record vital signs, body weight and intake and output, and prepare patient census; Make round and follow doctor(s) order and plan, implement and evaluate nursing intervention(s); Observe general and any unusual condition(s) of the patients and brings to the notice of the Physician(s) and/or Nursing Officer(s) and/or Charge Nurse on duty; Work with physician(s) or investigator(s) in conducting research protocols and performing various diagnostic procedures, such as lumber puncture and arrange for blood transfusion; Counsel the patient, attendant and provide health education & information; Identify emergency and need for referral to physician or other hospital; Document details of patient care interventions through using Computerized Hospital Information Management System in order to ensure efficient patient care services. Perform various nursing or medical procedures, such oropharyngeal suction, oxygen therapy, and various fluid administration; Check oxygen saturation and blood glucose, cardiac message, and artificial respiration by Ambu Bag and participates in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR); Ensure collection, labeling and dispatch of specimens to the laboratory; Operate medical equipment, e.g., ECG Machine, Infusion Pump, Cardiac Monitor, Suction Machine, Blood Glucose Meter, Syringe Pump, Ventilator, Warmer, etc; Ensure infection control practice and the security of the ward/unit in order to comply with Health & Safety measure Supervise associate nurses and other supporting staff, such as, health workers and sanitation attendants; Indent, administer and maintain drugs, equipment and other logistic inventory; Report breakages and losses of hospital items; Maintain inventory, indent medicine and supplies; Provide discharge instruction and information and home management to the patient and attendant. Establish and maintain good communication with Clients, Relatives and the multidisciplinary team members;

Requirements:

Education and Relevant Experience:

BSc in Nursing Science/Diploma in Nursing Science and Midwifery with valid registration from the Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council (BNMC) 1 to 3 years of relevant hospital working experiences; Candidates who have completed at least one year of Fellowship in Nursing Program from icddr,b will be given preference.

Contract Type and Duration:

Short Term Contractual Service Agreement basis; duration will be 11 months with a possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and performance.

Salary & benefits:

Tk. 47,873/-per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances; Festival bonus, income tax paid by icddr,b, and subsidized canteen; Transport and daycare facilities are subject to space availability.
