Under the supervision of the Regional Representative for Southern Africa, the Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
Conduct substantive research and analysis of human rights issues related to migration, xenophobia, racism and related intolerance in support of the implementation of the MPTF Project on Migration to improve social cohesion and migrant integration in South Africa.
Plan and coordinate activities related to OHCHR's engagement and technical assistance in the implementation of the MPTF project including monitoring and reporting of project activities, undertaking monthly monitoring and support visits to pilot communities, for discussions with the authorities and affected populations.
Direct and manage capacity-building programmes and other initiatives to be undertaken by OHCHR under the MPTF project.
Ensure that human rights issues, including their gender equality and the principle of Leave No One Behind, are integrated into the MPTF Project.
Assist in the planning and implementation of dialogues on migration with national stakeholders and right holders, targeting relevant national authorities, civil society and other stakeholders in South Africa.
PROFESSIONALISM: Knowledge of human rights issues and ability to identify related problems in their political, ethnic, racial, gender equality and socio-economic dimensions, including human rights mainstreaming in development work in the context of Southern Africa region. Knowledge of institutional mandates of human rights and development organizations, prevailing policies and procedures. Research and analytical skills, including ability to identify and participate in the resolution of human rights issues. Ability to evaluate and integrate information from a variety of sources and assess impact on the human rights situation in the area of assignment, including the political environment and legal statutes as they pertain to human rights. Ability to complete in-depth studies and reach conclusions on possible causes and solutions to human rights problems in specific societies and systems. Ability to relate to human rights issues and perspectives, including their gender equality dimensions, to political, social, economic and humanitarian programmes in affected countries and areas. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.
