Introduction

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is seeking a social media and content creation Intern to support its work at the ILO Regional Office for Africa (ROAF) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. This internship is open to applicants from all ILO member States.

The ROAF is responsible for promoting ILO principles and decent work priorities across the African continent. It provides strategic guidance to ILO Country Offices and Decent Work Technical Support Teams (DWTs) and engages with key regional institutions such as the African Union, African Development Bank, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa to advance inclusive, rights-based development. The ILO’s mandate in Africa focuses on promoting rights at work, enhancing decent employment opportunities, strengthening labour market governance, extending social protection, and fostering effective social dialogue.

Despite global efforts, child labour remains a pressing challenge. According to the 2024 Global Estimates, 138 million children are still engaged in child labour worldwide — nearly half of them in hazardous work. Sub-Saharan Africa bears the highest burden, with the region experiencing the largest increase in child labour in recent years. This surge is driven by intersecting crises, including poverty, informality, conflict, and increasingly, climate-related disruptions. Without urgent and targeted action, climate change risks reversing decades of progress in child labour elimination and pushing even more children into exploitative work.

In response to this challenge, the ILO is implementing the project “Accelerating Action for the Elimination of Child Labour in Supply Chains in Africa.” The project operates in six countries — Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, and Uganda — and focuses on tackling child labour in key supply chains by promoting sound public policies, improving governance, empowering stakeholders, and fostering knowledge exchange. A strong emphasis is placed on addressing gender-specific needs and ensuring that interventions are inclusive and sustainable.

As a social media and content creation Intern, you will play a key role in supporting the project’s visibility, outreach, and knowledge sharing efforts — contributing to meaningful change in the lives of children and communities across Africa.
The successful candidate will be a creative and dynamic thinker and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The intern will report to the project’s M&E and Knowledge Sharing Officer.
The internship program is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO nor the project. There should be no expectation of another job at the end of the internship.

Objectives

For the Intern:
To gain practical experience in digital advocacy and social media communications by supporting the planning, development, and implementation of content strategies that promote awareness and engagement around child labour issues. The intern will enhance their skills in social media management, visual storytelling, and online community engagement within the context of international development.

For the Project:
To strengthen the visibility and outreach of the “Accelerating Action for the Elimination of Child Labour in Supply Chains in Africa” project by improving its social media presence, ensuring timely, engaging, and consistent content across platforms, and aligning communication efforts with broader advocacy goals and ILO branding guidelines.

Learning areas

As an intern, you will gain exposure to the ILO’s strategic and practical approaches to eliminating child labour in global supply chains, particularly within the African context. You will be working directly with the ACCEL Africa regional team, with opportunities to interact with teams in all countries covered by the project, and benefit from ongoing mentorship and engagement with the ACCEL Africa technical specialists.

Under the overall supervision of the Monitoring and Evaluation, and Knowledge Sharing Officer, you will:
⦁ Learn about ILO communication strategies, and how they contribute to the elimination of child labour;
⦁ Gain practical experience in implementing a social media strategy tailored to advocacy and development objectives;
⦁ Develop your skills in content creation, including writing, editing, graphic design, and video for diverse platforms (e.g., X, LinkedIn, Tiktok);
⦁ Support the creation and dissemination of communication and advocacy materials, including success stories, multimedia products, and campaign assets;
⦁ Be encouraged to participate in internal meetings, capacity-building sessions, and interdepartmental knowledge exchanges to better understand the work of the ILO and its multidisciplinary teams;
