The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated to provide international protection and seek durable solutions for refugees and stateless persons.

The position

The incumbent normally works under the direct supervision of a higher grade field security staff. They make regular contacts with the local Government security authorities, implementing partners, refugee leaders and support community policing initiatives with the refugees and the police giving particular attention to protection of vulnerable groups.

The incumbent keeps abreast of the prevailing security situation by networking with the various sources of information; prepares preliminary reports including advisories and handles routine office matters in consultation with other Field Security staff as appropriate.

Duties and responsibilities

• Supports the Security Officer in monitoring the security environment, assist in collection of data and other information relevant to the function.
• Regularly reviews equipment provided for UNHCR operations to ensure that it is appropriate working order.
• Contribute to the preparation of status and progressive security reports by providing information, preparing data base and requisite tables etc.
• Assist in the updating of security plans, security operating procedures, advisories, guidance, and other security material.
• Assist in administrative tasks as required such as preparation of Admin and logistical issues for the delivery of training activities.
• Assist in the systematization of information and processes.
• Take minutes during security meetings and other forums as the situation may dictate from time to time.
• Submit recommendations to the supervisor on improvements to be made and solutions to be provided.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum qualifications required

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Desirable qualifications and skills

• Good knowledge of information management methods and tools.
• Oriented to innovation.
• Background in security related fields will be considered as an added value.
• Good command of MS Office.
• Knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign or Illustrator and Power BI will be considered as an added value.
• Good communication skills both oral and in writing.

Conditions
It is a full time role with working hours starting from 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Thursday and Friday from 9:00am to 2:30pm (35 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in UNHCR´s Country Office in Mexico City.
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
