Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship shall be with the People Strategy and Management Committee located in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) New York. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.
The People Strategy and Management Committee oversees people management across OCHA. The committee’s main objective will be developing and overseeing a four-year action plan for the OCHA People Strategy, including monitoring key performance indicators and proactively solving issues in human resources management. The committee will look to address these issues through a holistic approach, finding solutions through various lenses from across OCHA. The People Strategy and Management Committee is responsible for performing three key functions in OCHA: 1) Oversees the development and implementation of a four-year action plan for the OCHA People Strategy 2) Oversees the OCHA learning agenda, including the learning budget. 3) Acts as a discussion forum on issues relating to human resources management raised by staff and management.
The function can be performed remotely. The intern shall be under the general guidance and supervision of the Chief of the Learning Development Unit. The internship is being offered for a minimum period of three (3) months, with a possibility of extension up to six (6) months, starting as soon as possible.

Responsibilities

In general, the intern will support the People Strategy and Management Committee. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and may include but are not limited to assisting in the design and implementation of PSMC projects staff engagement, diversity and inclusion, talent management, duty of care and diversity and inclusion. Support the preparations for PSMC meetings including agenda and background documents. Coordinate follow up activities related to implementing the work of the PSMC. Contribute to the preparation of communication material, e. g. brochures, posters and newsletters. Respond to various inquiries and information requests internally and externally related to the work of the PSMC. Assist to track, monitor and report on the work of the PSMC through learning management systems and other data collection methods; and performing tasks as requested by supervisor, as appropriate.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the UN Internship programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
-Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or -Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or -Have graduated with a university degree
The University degree must be in the area of human resources, psychology, management, social sciences, international relations, management, public administration or in a related field.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable .

Assessment

Candidates will be assessed based on their Personal History Profile (PHP). Individual interviews may be conducted by the Hiring Manager directly for further consideration.
