Work LocationNew York Expected duration3 - 6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThis internship position is located in the Office of Internal Oversight Services Inspection and Evaluation Division (OIOS-IED), under the supervision of a Chief of Section and Evaluation Team Lead. OIOS-IED conducts independent inspections and evaluations on behalf of the Secretary-General and Member States. OIOS-IED's objective is \"to strengthen accountability, learning, efficiency, effectiveness and impact in the implementation of programmes and the relevance of administrative procedures and to assess whether the activities correspond to the mandates\". OIOS-IED is seeking graduate students who wish to gain professional experience in an international organization to supplement their studies. The internship provides practical educational experience working in a multicultural and intergovernmental organization. Under the supervision of managers of OIOS-IED, the intern is assigned projects and tasks that are relevant to their educational background and interests and is provided with the opportunity to apply and further develop their theoretical and practical knowledge. OIOS-IED is offering an internship for a minimum duration of 3 months, with the possibility of an extension up to 6 months. Remote/flexible working arrangements are possible. Under the overall supervision and guidance of the relevant manager, the intern will be expected to work on the evaluation of the Resident Coordinator system. The intern may assist in data collection, analysis and other assigned tasks. The intern will have the opportunity to gain exposure to the United Nations Secretariat's work in programme evaluation. Depending on the competencies and interests of the intern, and data collection needs stemming from the evaluation design, assignments may include: 1. Supporting the evaluation team on background research and summarizing data; 2. Assisting the evaluation team in collecting, organizing and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data. This may include: • Taking notes of stakeholder interviews and meetings; • Obtaining and organizing documents and internal data from United Nations Secretariat entities in different formats; • Conducting qualitative, statistical and quantitative analyses of the data collected; • Developing and testing databases and dashboards, including data cleaning, coding and recoding; and • Visualizing data using MS Excel and Power BI. 3. Assisting in other ad-hoc activities including reviews and edits of the various evaluation products, as instructed. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship through the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements: 1. Be (a) Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent); or (c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. 2. Be registered for, or have completed, studies in political science, economics, international affairs, public administration, gender studies, statistics, data science or related fields. 3. Be proficient with using software applications, preferably including Microsoft Excel and Power BI. Familiarity with data analysis software such as NVIVO, SPSS or Stata is desirable. Familiarity with survey design and online survey tools (e.g. Survey Monkey or Qualtrics) is also desirable. 4. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of its Charter. 5. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Fluency in French and/or Spanish is desired. Additional InformationApplicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.
