Internship at the Economic Research and Development Impact Department (ERDI) / Economic Analysis and Operational Support Division (EREA)

    1. Internship Topic
The Greening of Labor Markets: Evidence from Bangladesh

    2. Summary of Job Description
The transition to a low-carbon economy necessitates a clear understanding of how green jobs are defined and classified. While high-carbon jobs are relatively straightforward to identify, the challenge lies in pinpointing low-carbon jobs that emerge within existing occupations or industries. For instance, roles in manufacturing or engineering may evolve as firms adopt green technologies, such as renewable energy systems or eco-friendly production methods. Building a taxonomy for green jobs is essential to measure and support the labor market’s adaptation to climate policies, particularly in economies like Bangladesh, where structural changes must balance economic growth and environmental sustainability.

This internship will focus on developing a comprehensive taxonomy for green jobs, using online job vacancy data to identify and classify roles aligned with low-carbon activities. The intern will employ natural language processing techniques to analyze job descriptions and extract key skills and tasks associated with green technologies. This approach will be complemented by expert surveys to refine classifications and ensure alignment with local labor market contexts. By identifying the skill gaps and reallocation needs for transitioning workers, the intern will contribute to a deeper understanding of workforce development priorities in a low-carbon economy.
