Duties will be carried out in a hybrid manner (a combination of in-person presence and telecommuting from within the duty station at the UN Headquarters in New York). Telecommuting from outside the duty station may be considered on an exceptional basis. A part-time schedule may be considered on a very exceptional basis depending on the individual situation of the selected candidate. Expected durationThe internship will begin with an initial duration of 2 months, with the opportunity of an extension for up to a total of 6 months. The desired start date is 1 May 2025. Duties and ResponsibilitiesThis internship is located in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) in the Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD). The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work, as well as the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples, and persons marginalized from society and development. The intern will report to one of 5 designated Team Leads coordinating secretariat support to the preparations of the WSSD2. The intern will assist in the preparations of the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2). The General Assembly resolution 78/261 decided to convene WSSD2 to address the gaps and recommit to the Copenhagen Declaration for Social Development and Programme of Action and its implementation and give momentum towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The Summit builds on the 1995 World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen. The preparations are organized along five (5) core, interrelated functions: 1. Intergovernmental Support 2. Analytical and Substantive Support 3. Multistakeholder Engagement 4. Communication and Outreach 5. Logistics and host country arrangements This support is led by DESA-DISD under the responsibility and coordination of its Director. This support is delivered by 5 corresponding teams, each with a designated Team Lead. Internship Responsibilities The intern may be responsible for the following tasks: - Producing summaries of meetings, events, and seminars relevant to the Summit preparations. - Conducting research on key technical and substantive issues arising during the intergovernmental negotiations. - Contributing to the preparation of briefing papers and issue notes for the UN, its Member States, and other stakeholders, as needed. - Monitoring and tracking Member States’ positions, consensus points, and negotiated language related to social development, in line with past Summits/Conferences and as they emerge from major upcoming UN Summits/Conferences leading up to WSSD2; - Assisting in the coordination of stakeholder engagement in the Summit preparations. - Supporting content creation and dissemination by drafting engaging materials for social media and the Summit website, helping develop key messages, visual assets, and promotional materials, and assisting with translation or review of content in other UN languages to enhance global outreach. - Assisting with media and performance monitoring by tracking media coverage related to the Summit’s themes and compiling social media engagement and performance reports. - Assisting with organizing and coordinating logistical aspects of Summit preparations, including scheduling meetings, preparing meeting materials, and tracking action points to ensure timely follow-up. - Supporting the coordination of the UN Interdepartmental Task Force by maintaining participant lists, sending meeting invitations, drafting meeting summaries, and following up on agreed actions. - Performing other related tasks as requested. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). 1.
