Background
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (MLF) is dedicated to reversing the deterioration of the Earth's stratospheric ozone layer. It was established in 1991 as the financial mechanism of the Montreal Protocol to assist developing countries (Article 5 countries in the language of the Protocol) in complying with their obligations under the Montreal Protocol. The MLF is managed by the Executive Committee which is assisted by the Fund Secretariat, located in Montreal, Canada and administered by UNEP (www.multilateralfund.org).
This Individual Contractor announcement is meant to solicit applications for rostering purposes to serve as the pool of Editors to undertake editorial review of project evaluations, reports on projects with specific reporting requirements, policy documents drafted by the Secretariat staff to be submitted to the Executive Committee.
The Individual Contractor will report to a Senior Programme Management Officer.
Specifically, the Individual Contractor will be required to:
• Edit texts of a specialized or technical nature to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice.
• Ensure that material adheres to established editorial standards and conforms with the United Nations policy and practices.
• Ensure that phraseology and terminology are correct and that the style is appropriate to the audience.
• Verify the accuracy of facts, figures, references, etc. through research, reference sources and consultation.
• Identify unclear or ambiguous statements for consideration by the author.
• Perform other related duties as required. Qualifications/special skills
A first-level university degree in translation and editing is required and/or related areas is required.
A minimum of 5 years of work experience in report writing, journalism, editing and/or translation work is required.
Be familiar with the technical terms used in Executive Committee documents produced by the Secretariat including complex and lengthy documents.
Great attention to detail is required.
Willingness to work during week-ends if necessary will be highly desired. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this Individual Contractor contract, fluency in written and oral English is required. Working knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.
