IPIS is looking for a GIS intern to start in November or December 2021 for about 6 months, based in Antwerp. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and early applicants will be prioritised.
The International Peace Information Service (IPIS) is an independent research institute providing tailored information, analysis and capacity enhancement to support those actors who want to realise a vision of durable peace, sustainable development and the fulfilment of human rights.
IPIS processes a large amount of (geographic) information which is published in reports, maps and dashboards. The GIS and data team – a small team of two to three people – assists the multiple IPIS research projects with collecting, processing, and visualising data whilst optimising the data workflow using automation principles. In addition, to facilitate data exploration and to communicate key findings, we conceive and develop digital tools such as static/interactive dashboards and webmaps. Over these last years, we have evolved to an Open Source and Open Data oriented modular system where there is also place for experimentation and improvement.
You will be included within the IPIS GIS and data team, providing support to different projects related to conflict analysis and natural resources good governance in sub-Sahara Africa. You will contribute to the management of IPIS’ geographic databases, support researcher in interpreting data and produce statistics, visualisations, web- and printed (GIS) maps under the supervision of IPIS colleagues. As IPIS is continually improving and streamlining its data management processes, you will also be encouraged to explore and develop new ideas.
Proficiency in English mandatory, French or Dutch an asset.
We offer an inspiring environment with knowledgeable researchers on natural resources, conflict mapping, arms trade, business and human rights and capacity enhancement. You will get the facilities and assistance to have a fruitful and enjoyable internship (laptop, IT support, administrative support, …).
Internships are unsalaried but living costs can be partly compensated according to your personal situation (food, transport, housing).
We’re typically looking for an intern for a period of six months. The internship is based in IPIS office in Antwerp, Belgium. The successful candidate should already have the right to work or study in the European Union.
