Work for the IMF. Work for the World.

The Independent Evaluation Office of the IMF (IEO) has openings for more than one Economist/Senior Economist in its office in Washington DC.

The IEO is a small unit that operates independently of IMF management and at arm’s length from the Executive Board. It produces about two evaluations per year on issues related to the IMF, with the objective of supporting the IMF Executive Board in its oversight function, strengthening the learning culture of the IMF, and promoting the external credibility of the IMF. See the IEO website https://ieo.imf.org/ for detailed IEO terms of reference and terms and conditions of employment, the list of ongoing and completed evaluations, as well as of topics being considered for future ones.

Job Description

The selected candidate will be assigned to contribute to one or more of the ongoing evaluations. S/he will help the respective team leaders in executing the evaluation(s), including by contributing to background papers, helping supervise the work of consultants and research officers, and contributing to the main evaluation report. S/he would be expected to work independently on background work for these reports, and to contribute to reports prepared by other IEO colleagues and to the general functions of the IEO.

Candidates are required to hold an advanced university degree in economics or related field with a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience. Experience in a central bank, finance ministry, or international organization would be particularly relevant. Experience in the field of evaluation would be an asset. Excellent analytical skills and ability to listen to and probe alternative views are required. The candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work across teams, develop effective relationships, and collaborate effectively with colleagues and other stakeholders. Proficiency in English is required, and fluency in other languages is desirable. Familiarity with the IMF and/or the IEO’s mandate and operations is also desirable.

The initial contract will be for two years but can be extended for a period of up to 12 years.
