The Corporate Services Department within Global Corporate Solutions (GCS) provides services to the World Bank Group in the areas of Translation and Interpretation; Graphic Design and Publications; Printing; Interactive Media; Travel and Visa services; Food and Conference Services; Mail and Shipping; Staff Services; and the Art Program. The Department also provides administrative support and oversight to the World Bank Family Network, the World Bank Group Staff Association, and the 1818 Society, and is responsible for setting the policy framework and service.
The Interactive Media Services Unit (GCSIM) specializes in delivering impactful and innovative media solutions to WBG internal clients, emphasizing exceptional quality and service. GCSIM provides expertise in video production, photography, cartography, and immersive media (including virtual and augmented reality). The Cartography Unit within GCSIM is responsible for maintaining cartographic standards across the organization and supporting initiatives that leverage visual aids to represent WBG data. This includes operational project outcomes, indexes, and related analytics. The Geographer plays a pivotal role in data visualization and cartography services, collaborating with teams to develop high-quality cartographic products such as maps, interactive dashboards, GIS analysis, map clearances, and geospatial consulting services. This role works closely with other units within the Interactive Media Services team, ensuring seamless coverage across all multimedia functions while supporting WBG operations, legal, publications, and communications teams.
Duties and Accountabilities
Design and development of cartographic and geospatial information:
• Creates and designs professional maps for reports, publications and web applications using advanced cartographic skills in Adobe Illustrator and MAPublisher, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and QGIS.
• Consults in the project planning process with clients and provides ideas/best practice solutions.
• Develops and implements procedures to solve problems that are caused by data limitations, project deadlines, and client’s changing needs.
GIS, data analysis and visualization:
• Leverages experience in GIS to analyze and visualize data.
• Collects and compiles spatial data when necessary (data cleaning).
• Designs and creates complex interactive map designs in Flourish, Datawrapper, Mapbox, Tableau, ESRI StoryMaps and Experience Builder, using GIS data to provide clear and understandable data visualization.
• Provides advice on the integration and visualization of new and existing data.
Client and business responsibilities:
• Ensures the flow of information between client and production staff throughout project development.
• Monitors work completion on schedule and with expected quality levels.
• Engages with clients to tailor project needs, data requirements and timeline.
• Ensures cost recovery goals are achieved by actively tracking project expenses and tailoring estimating efforts.
• Supports map clearance processes by providing expertise
• Ensures timely response to all inquiries as expected.
Selection Criteria
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Cartography, Geography, or Geospatial Information Science with at least two years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to work under tight deadlines and to coordinate/deliver multiple projects at the same time.
• Ability to take complex data and make it understandable to a non-technical audience.
• Ability to deal sensitively in multi-cultural environments and build effective working relationships with clients and colleagues in a team environment.
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills to identify and resolve production and processing challenges effectively.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including proficiency in email correspondence and the ability to follow directions.
• Desire and ability to learn new skills as industry technology evolves.
Essential Specialized Skills
• Experience in working with GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, QGIS
• Demonstrated high proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, primarily Illustrator, and Photoshop.
• Experience in creating data dashboards with visualization tools like Flourish, Datawrapper and ESRI Experience Builder.
• Strong working knowledge of cloud-based software as a service (SaaS), such as Mapbox, CARTO, and Flourish, as well as JavaScript libraries, such as Leaflet.
• Web development knowledge of JS, HTML, and CSS is a plus.
• Experience in producing content for interactive media output desired.
