Work LocationRemote - Home-based Expected duration10 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesORGANIZATIONAL SETTING The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signature in Rio in 1992. The Convention has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by United Nations Environment Programme. Its main tasks are to arrange for and service meetings of the Conference of the Parties, including preparation of pertinent documentation, operation of the central node of the clearing-house mechanism, liaison and coordination with other international bodies and processes and, in close collaboration with these partners, the provision of technical support for the effective implementation of the Convention. Duties and Responsibilities The consultant shall provide technical, organizational and communication support to the work of the Secretariat on Invasive alien species, including leading the capacity building and awareness raising activities linked to projects run by the Secretariat. The consultant will develop technical and intersessional documents, organize meetings, workshops and webinars, updating the website, develop awareness training materials, support the development of work plans and budgets, review project proposals, preparing activity and donor reports; contribute to the work of the Secretariat related to invasive alien species and implementation of Target 6 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and; coordinate with other relevant thematic programs of work and cross-cutting issues of the Convention. In addition, the consultant will also coordinate the work and collaboration with the members of the Inter-Agency Liaison Group on invasive alien species to enhance synergies and ensure coherent approaches. Under the overall supervision of the Director, Science, Society and Sustainable Futures (SSSF) Division and the Head of the Biodiversity Science, Policy and Governance, and the direct supervision of the Programme Officer on Invasive alien species and Biodiversity and health, the consultant will perform the following duties to support the implementation of Target 6 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and the work of the Convention related to invasive alien species: 1. Project management: develop concept notes and proposals for donor support, support the development of workplans and budgets of existing projects, prepare quarterly and annual progress reports for the donors and support the effective implementation of projects. 2. Capacity building: assist with capacity building activities and partnerships relating to invasive alien species, including supporting the organization of webinars and regional workshops to promote the use of tools and guidelines to facilitate the implementation of Target 6; and to develop and apply a survey to measure the impacts of the capacity building activities. 3. Inter-Agency liaison group: lead the coordination of the work of the Inter-Agency Liaison Group to enhance synergies and ensure coherent approaches, including the organization of liaison group face-to-face meetings, preparations of meeting documents, servicing the meeting and following up on relevant recommendations and decisions. 4. Scientific, technical, and organizational support: Provide support to the work of the Secretariat relating to Target 6 and its cross-cutting elements through, inter alia, preparation of substantive inputs to meetings of the Conference of the Parties and its subsidiary bodies. This includes review, compilation and analysis of information, organization of meetings, online forums and servicing these meetings. 5. Awareness raising: Promote the work on invasive alien species, within the Secretariat, and externally. This includes preparation of communication and outreach materials about IAS and Target 6. Disseminate the materials online, in meetings and events, and through various social media channels as needed. Keep the IAS website under review and up to date. 6. Perform other relevant duties as required. Qualifications/special skillsAcademic qualifications: Bachelor’s university degree in biology, ecology, environmental sciences or related fields is required. Advanced degree in the field of invasive alien species is desirable. Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of working experience in the field of addressing biological invasions and/or invasive alien species is required. Project implementation and monitoring, reviewing, editing and drafting scientific and/or technical documents, and knowledge and work experience relevant to environmental areas of work under the Convention on Biological Diversity is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Working knowledge of other UN languages is also desirable. NOTE: \"Fluency equals a rating of \"fluent\" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and \"Knowledge of\" equals a rating of \"confident\" in two of the four areas.
