The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Sinuni, Iraq.

As Expert Agriculture you will be working for a BMZ funded project which aims at developing sustainable livelihoods and improving self-help capacities for returnees and vulnerable members of host communities in the selected regions of Ninewa and Salah Al-Din by rebuilding agricultural systems using resource conserving techniques. You will ensure that activities are planned and implemented in a technically correct manner and build the capacities of national agronomists for innovative and resource efficient agricultural methods.

Your responsibilities

  • Support the Head of Project in the implementation of project measures according to the rules and standards of BMZ and Welthungerhilfe
  • Provide technical input related to agriculture/horticulture, Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and livelihood interventions
  • Lead field teams and manage/supervise their implementation activities at field level, including capacity building with the Iraqi staff
  • Ensure due diligence in the use of finances, materials and other project utilities
  • Modify and continue project planning in cooperation with the Head of Project
  • Ensure project documentation at field level related to the project implementation
  • Represent Welthungerhilfe in meetings as instructed by the Head of Project

Your profile

  • A university or polytechnic degree in agricultural sciences, rural development or a comparable specialised qualification suitable to the position
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience working with INGOs in the field of agriculture, livelihoods or nutrition in a transitional/development context
  • Sound professional experience in arid and semi-arid climate environments (preferably in the Middle East Region)
  • BMZ donor experience would be an advantage
  • Excellent coordination and organizational skills, including ability to work under pressure
  • Co-operation and team skills
  • A high level of mental and physical resilience and readiness to travel to areas with volatile local conditions
  • Excellent spoken and written English; German language skills will be an asset
